Source: In the Presence of the Divine Narratives of Experiences with Maha Periyaval - Volume 1 Translated by: Sujatha Vijayaraghavan When Periyava was camping in Satara, a Justice of the Supreme Court came for darshan. Periyava conversed with him for a long time. Finally, with obvious hesitation he said, 'Christians wear the cross. Muslims shave their head and wear a cap. the women wear the purdah. It is regretful that Hindus lack some such sign. I would be grateful if Maharaj tells me what signifies us'. With a smile, Periyava pointed to his ears touching them. Then with a finger he gestured as if the year was being pierced. 'From the Sethu to the Himachala --asethu Himachala--it is the tradition of the Hindus to pierce the ears!' The Justice was delighted with the answer. 'None, but Periyava could have given such a subtle answer. His holiness is really great,' he said, his face beaming with joy, before he received prasada and left.
