Namaskaram: In my experience, it takes 5 minutes for me to do 108 gayatri japa and roughly 50 minutes to do 1080 gayatri japa. I was using japa mala for some time and then kara (hand counting) mala also. But since yesterday I thought I would just recite without any counting (for 50 minutes or 1 hr) not keeping track either through japa mala or kara mala. Is this ok? The reason is I am hoping I can concentrate little better. Can elders give their opinion in this matter?

Very nice decision goahead all the best If we keep counting we tend to loose concentration.

Hi,
Please do gayathri in a slow and phased manner. Do not emphasis on count then it serves no purpose.

You will find in due course that counting is not a burden. Our ancestors have prescribed japa procedures with profound basis based on experience of Rishis. Please do not deviate. Continue counting while doing japa. Don't look at the clock while doing japa lest you will lose concentration.
