If you are living in your parents in law's house, there will be a lamp in the pooja room that they would be using from many years. Hence you may keep the new silver lamp inside and may use it on special occasions. If you have shifted to another place, then you may use it in your new home. Your parents in law have only told you so as everyday usage will make the lamps lose their shine. It is OK to keep the lamps inside without using them if you have other set of lamps to use.
