Namaskaram: During initial sankalpa I make sankalpa for 108 gayatri japa and later if I want to do more, what is the procedure for it?
I do sahasra japa as much as possible but hardly with concentration. Mind keeps going all over (thinking about house problems, or office work or something except the point of devotion). Sometimes i try to look at Sri Rama or Sri Venkateswara Swamy but again cant keep looking also here also and again get diverted. How do the learned members try to maintain concentration? Same thing is true when I read anything. So I feel bad because what is happening is basically I am doing puja mechanically (my hands can do actions that they are doing, my eyes are reading the letters and so on). I feel bad that what is the use of this kind of puja. Better not do anything rather than this kind of puja is what i feel lot of times.
Jai Sri Rama

Hi Sarveswara,
Concentration develops with detachment. Let go of the worries about future, present, past. If we accept that our current birth is God given one and accept that whatever we are experiencing mentally and physically is a command of god then we have little to complain about. There are many methods to develop concentration, but as long as we chase material pleasures the mind will be spinning. If you long for internal peace and start detaching yourself and start accepting your job, life, relations, friends, status etc as they are then that is a first step towards peace. The easiest method is nama japa, given our current way of life.
It is difficult, but we have to change our attitude.
Get the book titled "Sandhyavandhanam" by Sringeri Acharya. It is a treasure to be kept at home. It will give lot of insights.

Hi,
I have the book in Tamil, but I strongly feel there should be a telugu version also. Check with Sringeri Peetam office in the city you live. It costs only 100/- but the information within is priceless. I would say it is a research material.
Regards, Sambu

Please call the Sringeri main mutt and ask them. They may have a Telugu or english version. It is difficult to translate the contents from tamil to english. The effect and true meaning will be lost in translation and neither I do have that much time. :-)

Our Acharyas have suggested that we may think of our favourite deity(preferably Kula Devata) and concentrate on one form of the same(either the one worshipped at home by family or the deity at a temple) to improve concentration. We should have faith that the japa will one day or other facilitate concentration to go to the next stage of Dhyana. Depending on our purva janma vasanas it may take a lot of time but we should never stop or get frustrated quickly. Please read books of great saints like Swami Sivananda, Swami Vivekananda's and others on Japayoga, Rajayoga etc. Your faith will grow and efforts intensify.

Hi Sarveswara,
As per shastras if v do Sankalpam by touching the water then v MUST do that otherwise it will become very big "DHOSHA", so please be careful before making sankalp. I would suggest you to do sankalp as " Gayatri Japa Karishyae" (without any predetermined count). Then u do japam as much as possible with full concentration. Later when u get free time and when your body and mind is in relaxed mode then u can do Sahastra Japam.
For concentration please think of Gayatri Mata correlating with Dhyana Mantram. Even then if u are unable to concentrate then think of your spiritual Guru Paduka, if u do not have any spiritual guru then think of Jagat Guru "ADI SANKARACHARYA" paduka.
I have krishna yajur veda sandhyavandanam pdf copy (Telugu only) which very elaborative if anyone requires please send your request to vvlprabhakara.rao@gmail.com i will share.
