There is an old phrase “Speech is Silver, Silence is Golden.”
A good speech can express a lot - and may be compared to precious silver. But then, the power of silence is so enormous that it can make people reflect quietly and achieve enlightenment. Therefore, silence is most valuable like gold.
Maha Periva explains this concept beautifully quoting the following slokam from Adi Sankara’s Dakshinamurthy Stotram:
मौनव्याख्या प्रकटित परब्रह्मतत्त्वं
Maunavyaakhyaa Prakattita Parabrahma-tattvam
Profound Silence awakens the Knowledge of the Supreme Brahman
One cannot really get to know Parabrahmam by mind or speech. The Brahma Tatwam (Philosophy) is best explained by Silence.
Maha Periva says that by practising silence, one can progress from the stage of "No-thought to God-thought."
When practising silence, some people may initially experience an empty mind without any thoughts. This is a temporary phase. If continued with prayers, one can go from this stage to the final stage of God-thought. The 'No thought' stage is called 'Layam' and the final stage is called 'Samadhi.'

The first spiritual law of success is the LAW OF PURE POTENTIALITY ,i.e. pure consciousness. Our essential nature is one of pure potentiality. One way to access the field of pure potentiality is through the daily practice of SILENCE,meditation and non-judgement.Spending time in nature,i.e sitting silently and watch a Sun- set or Sun- rise, listen to the sound of the waves of ocean or a stream or enjoying the beauty of flowers in the garden etc. will also give us infinite creativity, freedom and bliss.By regularly observing silence for a certain period of time on each day both in the morning and evening and gradually increasing the period of silence, meditation ,over a period of time one can attain peace, happiness and eternal bliss ! The secret of attaining Bliss by our revered Paramacharya is by constant practice of Silence (Mounam),meditation and prayers of Sri Kamakshi Amman and Sri Maha Thirupura Sundari sametha Sri Chandra Mouliswara.
Hara Hara Sankara, Jaya Jaya Sankara !

Very nicely said Sri. Radha. For most people, the hard part is really practising what Maha Periva preached. But then, once we make a start, the joy comes automatically. Thanks for providing the inspiration to enjoy the power of silence.
