In most temples, Lord Shiva is usually worshipped in the form of a Shivalingam. There are 12 jyotirlingas in India that are held in great reverence. There is a sweet sanskrit shloka that lists the twelve jyotirlinga temples. Here it is:
“Saurashtre Somanathamcha Srisaile Mallikarjunam| Ujjayinya Mahakalam Omkaramamaleswaram ||
Paralyam Vaidyanathancha Dakinyam Bheema Shankaram | Setu Bandhethu Ramesam, Nagesam Darukavane||
Varanasyantu Vishwesam Tryambakam Gautameethate| Himalayetu Kedaaram, Ghrishnesamcha shivaalaye||
Etani jyotirlingani, Saayam Praatah atennarah| Sapta Janma Kritam pApam, Smaranena Vinashyati||”
The listing is easy to remember if you recite the slokam:
- Somnath in Saurashtra (Gujarat)
- Mallikarjun in Srisailam (A.P.)
- Mahakaleshwar in Ujjain (M.P.)
- Omkareshwar in Shivpuri / mAmaleswara (M.P.)
- Vaidyanath in Parali (Maharashtra)
- Nageswar in Darukavanam (Maharashtra)
- Kedareswar in Kedarnath/Himalayas (Uttarkhand)
- Tryambakeswar in Nasik (Maharashtra)
- Ramanath in Rameshwaram (TamilNadu)
- Bhimashankar in Dakini (Maharashtra)
- Viswanath in Varanasi (U.P.) and
- Ghrishneswar in Devasrovar (Maharashtra)
It is believed that those who chant the Dwadasa JyotirLinga Stotram morning and evening will get rid of their sins and attain salvation and enlightenment.

Is Darukavanam in Maharashtra??? I went to a Shiva temple in Jageshwar, Pithoragarh district, Uttarakhand - which is full of one particular type of tree which is not found anywhere else - and we were told that this is Dharukavan and the Shiva is one of the 12 Jyotirlingam!

Thanks for the query. It seems that three temples in India (the Jageshwar temple near Almora in Uttarakhand, the Nageshwara temple near Dwaraka in Gujarat, and the Nagnath temple in Aundha in Maharashtra) have identical Darukavana Jyotirlingas. The one refered to is the Aundha Naganath temple located near Parbhani city in Hingoli District of Maharashtra.
