In Sraddha karma for ancestors , when we do Pinda pradana .. where to leave them at last ? Water , fire , mud .. Some feed them to birds and animals ? Some where we heard we should not give it Cow !
Where to leave it is the best in the order of priority ??

It has to be kept in the 'Bhumi'. I was told that in the MahaBharatha when Dharmaputra made it in favour of his father, his father's hand came up from the Bhumi. But Dharmaputra being a follower of Dharmashastram, did not give it in his father's hand, but placed it in the Bhumi. This signifies that it will have to be left on the ground.

That was a good response from our respected moderator Sri Venkatswam.
By convention and tradition, we note that the pindas are usually passed to rivers (non-stationary water sources). And if that is not available, you leave it in the Bhumi (mother earth) - however you need to ensure that it is not eaten off by animals like cat and dog - so some people dig underground and leave the balls there.
A few others resort to giving it off to the cow as the last resort if they cannot follow the first and second options as given above, but that is generally not a very preferred option.
Trust this helps.
