Sastras show the way

We are blessed to have taken this human form. During the deluge, all atmas are like inanimate objects. God takes pity on them and gives them a body. He does so because He is merciful. Just as a tiller tills the soil and cultivates to reap grains, so does the Lord give us a body to harvest our souls, explained Akkarakkani Srinidhi, in a discourse. But when we take birth as human beings, that does not mean liberation comes automatically. How do we find a guide to liberation? How do we know what proper conduct is? We need a list of instructions on how to attain liberation. That path is shown to us by the sastras. The sastras are like a light that illuminates our path, and this light, if followed, leads us to the Supreme One. He who is in the dark needs a light to guide him and show him the right path. There is nothing darker than our ignorance (agnana). So we need this light called the sastras to lead us out of the darkness of ignorance. The aim of the sastras is our welfare.
Parents give their love to their children unconditionally for, they have only one concern, their welfare. But the sastras are like a thousand caring parents. So intense is the happiness the sastras can confer on us, if we adhere to them.
What are the sastras? How do we know what comes under the title of sastras? The Vedas, the Bhagavad Gita, the Puranas and the Ramayana — all these would come under the category of sastras. A sastra is ‘that which prescribes and proscribes.’ The Ramayana gives us many guidelines on conducting ourselves. Lord Rama is an obedient son. Lakshmana serves the Lord selflessly. Bharata does not contradict the Lord, but obeys Him. Hanuman serves Rama loyally and sincerely. Rama never sways from the path of dharma. Above all, He embraces anyone who surrenders to Him, even if the person is from the enemy camp. He also says that He will save anyone who surrenders to Him, even if the person is an undesirable one. He shows the importance of reaching God through surrender, and for this reason the Ramayana is known as Saranagati Sastra for, it is a sacred work that explains the concept of total surrender to the Lord. The Ahirbudhnya Samhita also talks of the significance of surrender.
Addendum
Sri Rama stands for Truth, Sitha stands for devotion,Lakshmana stands for service Bharatha stands for Bhakthi,Hanuman for Bhuthi Chaturyam and courage Vibhishana for Saranagathi Tatvam, Gukan for Friendship-- Sri Ramayana shows many morals for mortals to follow and benefit.
