Fundamental principles from Dharma Sastram that could be easily followed on a day-to-day basis.
While Dharma sastra mandates a ‘DO IT COMPULSORILY’ tone, for the benefit of members and to encourage them, I have completely softened the tone (I have no authority to do it, but atleast it will help us gradually follow). Let us all strive to follow these to the maximum.
I will try to follow this up with some very basic ‘stree dharmam’ shortly.

- Grihastaas can make it a habit to wear Panchakachcham and do their nithyakarmas.
- It can be made a habit to sit and drink liquids. (drinking liquids with standing posture is prohibited)
- Yagynopaveetham should be made as a ‘maalai’ (niveetham) and should be elevated and wound up around the right ear while using the bath rooms. This practice can begin at home (one may find it easier to follow this even in office – it is not as hard as one thinks)
- To the extent possible one may gradually reduce the intake of onions and garlic even though there are other ‘nishiddha’ vegetables
- At least for one day official (or even personal) tours, one can take chapattis made at home for lunch/dinner etc and to the extent possible avoid eating outside.
- Brahma yagynam is very easy and it is less time consuming than even Sandhyavandanam. Rishi Tarpanam and Deva Tarpanam (which are part of this) is much needed in this hour. It normally takes less than 5 minutes. While it must follow Madhyanikam, please consult with your ‘aathu vaadhyar’ if it can be done just after Sandhyavandam also.
- ‘Lalaata Soonyam Smasana Samanam’ – An empty forehead, - without respective talisman is considered to be equivalent to a cremation ground. So, to the extent possible please have your respective symbols – Vibuthi, Kumkum, Vaishnava symbols etc. Agreed that it may vanish during the course of the day, but it can stay fresh and alive if we are careful about its existence and considering that lot of us are in air-conditioned atmosphere. Even when you are taking some photographs, ensure that you not only comb your hair, but also make sure your forehead is not empty.
I will try to follow this up with some very basic ‘stree dharmam’ shortly.
