Vibhuti (Sacred ash)(This Q&A is taken from the chapter titled FAQs, on our Anushtanams & Rituals, from the book 'THE GREAT HINDU TRADITION') Qn.
Which is correct – applying damp vibhuti or dry vibhuti? Ans.
Generally vibhuti is to be worn damp, after making it into a paste. But when we get Swami Prasada in temples and other places we should apply it as it is, dryly. Vibhuti that we bring from temples should not be mixed with the stock at home. Important: After applying vibhuti paste, you should not wash the hands but cleanse it by applying the remnant on other parts including legs and hands. Attachments:

Hari OM, Thank you for the vibhuti information. But one thing still not clear. You said, Vibhuti that we bring from temples should not be mixed with the stock at home. Why? ANything particular reason. Normally I do mix, becos, since I am not going to temple every otherday, atleast I feel I apply everyday as swami prasadam even for sandhyavandanam, I will take the mixed vibhuti (home+temple), make as paste and apply and do sandhyavandanam. You say you practice in a particular way. While on the subject I may say that generally people do it the same way- thats why I have answered this question in my book. Well, if some elders of your family had said so, as you do now, follow the same, or else - if it is on your own, you can give a rethinking.
Anyway since you wanted some clarifications again, I will try to elaborate it to the extent possible.
Vibhuti when we get it from Gosala or from some sources like Agnihotram, is to be applied mixing with water - kuzhaithu ittu kolla vendum to be precise - of course it can be applied dryly also - both ways are permitted.
But as regards to the Swami Prasada vibhuti, it may not be right to add anything extra, not even water, but apply it as it is. To draw a parallel example, suppose the prasadams like puliyodharai or chakkara pongal that we are given as prasadam lacks some salt or sweet as the case may be, do we add and then consume it - no; it is in fact a dosham if we add anything for our 'taste' sake.
In several homes people do stock swami prasada vibhuti stored in a separate sambadam which they use, you must have also observed, whenever they feel like or (and) ask children also to take & apply before they sit for studies, etc. In fact I have seen in many houses that immediate after face-wash etc in the morning hours elders take swami prasada Vibhuti, apply it dryly and then sit for coffee !

Thanks for the clear response regarding Vibhuti respected Sri. Sastrigal. I would like to know if adding kumkum from temples to the everyday wear kumkum boxes at home is permissible. Since there is no opportunity to mix anything else with kumkum before wearing, can the temple prasada kumkum be added to the regular kumkum box & used normally or should it be maintained separately?

But here again, the kumkum which we get as prasada should not be used once again for Devata karyams using in archana, for offering as upacharam during panchaytana puja, applying every day to Kuthu vilakku and so on. Hence it is better always to keep both separately.

Thanks again for the clarifying the doubt Sri. Sastrigal. That sounds correct to me. Will practice it this way from now on. Jaya Jaya Shankara Hara Hara Shankara.
