Dear Member, Here is the reply received from Shri Sarma Sastrigal on email: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This Gopichadanam - urdhva namam - is generally worn by the devotees of Sri Rama and Sri Krishna. Also this gopichandana must have become popular after Krishna Chaitanya period. Somewhere I have come across this beautiful vakyam on this: वैकुंठस्थ हृदात् एतत् चन्दनम् स्थापितं मया । गोपस्त्रीणां च भोगार्थं यदाहृत्य च तत्पुनः ।। (वासुदेव उपनिषत्)In some parts of Tamilnadu we find some smarthas too, those belong to Uttara desa Vadama sect, applying this instead of Vibhuthi after madhyahnika kaalam. As far the normal chandanam (sandalwood), I think sometime back I have already posted a detailed note on this. It is entirely different and nothing to do with gopichandanam.
