Thanks to Sri Bharani Dharan for the share. The only place in India where you can see ambal in this form is Kholapur Mahalakshmi (see the pic above). Normally, when we hear the word lakshmi, we immediately think of Vishnu’s consort – but it is not correct. Lakshmi is the general term used.
Who is She?
TripurA rahasyam says that LalitA is called Brahma in the Vedas,
She is called Vishnu by the Vaishnavites,
She is called Siva by the Saivites and
She is called Shakti by the SAktas.
The purna parabrahma in every mArgam is LalitA only but She adopts different forms and is called by different names.
In shAktam, the pure shAkta darshana of lalitAmbikA is sri mahAlakshmi, also known as mula chandikA. This mahAlakshmi is the shAkta purna parabrahma, the pure supreme godhead in shaktism. She is the mother of the trimurthi brahma vishnu shiva, the tridevi sarasvati lakshmi pArvati and all the other deities.
She has four arms. She holds a matulungam (citrus fruit) , a cup (pAnapAtram), a shield (ketakam) and a mace (gadA). She bears a yoni, a lingam and serpent on Her head.
Why is that?
The bhuvaneshvari samhitA answers this question mentioning the following verses:
mātulungam karmavrndam kriyāshaktyātmikā gadā।
jnyānashaktyātmakam khetam turyavrttistu pānakam।।
The matulungam/citrus fruit signifies karmavrindam, that it is mahAlakshmi only who holds the capacity to bestow fruits to all our actions being sarva-karma-phala-dAtri.
The gadA/mace signifies kriyA shakti via which creation and preservation take place. The ketaka/shield signifies jnAna shakti, the power of intellect and wisdom which grant us the ability to discover Her true nature. The pAnapAtram/ bowl stands for Her continuous enjoyment of the bliss of her pure svarupa.
What about the yoni lingam and snake? Why does mahAlakshmi chandi has that?
The verses from Bhuvaneshvari samhitA continue as follow:
lingam purusha ityukto yonistu prakrtih smrtā। nāgah kālah samākhyātah sambandhastu tayordvayoh।।
The lingam: signifies mahAlakshmi chandikA Herself is the Adi purusha. She Herself manifests as parama purusha/parameshvara, thus She bears a lingam on Her head.
The yoni: signifies that She Herself is Adi prakriti. She manifests as mula prakriti/parameshvari, thus She bears a yoni on Her head.
The nAga/snake on Her head signifying kAla which causes Purusha and Prakriti to get related to each other. Thus She is purusha prakriti aikyam, that is She is not only purusha, She is not only prakriti but the indistinguishable union of both, sAkshAt Sri LalitA parAbhattArikA.
This reminds us of the words of mahAtripurasundari in devi upanishad where She says: mattah prakriti purushAtmakam jagat: both prakriti and purusha comes from me in this universe.
LalitopAkhyAnam mentions how it is mahAtripurasundari kAmAkshi Herself who appeared as mahAlakshmi at the beginning of creation and created brahma, vishnu and shiva along with their respective counterparts sarasvati, lakshmi and pArvati.
DurvAsA mahArishi’s saubhagya chintAmani kalpam mentions the most intricate details about rites and rituals for the worship of kAnchi kAmAkshi parAbhattArikA which is still being used till today in Her temple. This same saubhAgya chintAmani contains many details about kAmAkshi’s manifestation as mula chandikA mahAlakshmi. Thus srividyA parameshvari kAmAkshi is called TripurA, the mother of the trimurthi and tridevi.
That mulachandikA mahAlakshmi is alone and supreme. She is mahAsaptadashi kalA, eternally a virgin in nature, thus She has been praised as Adi kumAri. As She is complete in Herself, She thus enjoys Her own eternal nature via Her bowl or pAnapAtram. She is the singular purna parabrahma, the first, the original source, the highest and the ultimate last as well, Sri TripurA Parameshvari.
Jaya jaya chandikA!
