MAHASHIVARATRI VRATA POOJA
AS PER SANATANA DHARMA SHASTRA
Namaskaram. After 1000s of views and appreciation of our article “Poorna Chandra Grahana/Total Lunar Eclipse” I am pleased to write about Mahashivaratri Vratam and Pooja. Let’s first understand why we celebrate Mahashivaratri and then look at what should we do on Shivaratri?
There is a famous story in the Puranas which mentions that once Brahma and Vishnu had an argument on who is supreme amongst Gods and each were proclaiming themselves to be superior. At that time, from the earth rose a huge, immeasurable brilliant column of light equaling the radiance of a crore Sun, which put up a challenge to them, and said “the one who wins this challenge which I set in front of both of you, will be proclaimed as the Supreme God of the Universe”. Lord Brahma was asked to find the topmost end of the brilliant column of light and Lord Vishnu was asked to find the bottom most end of this brilliant column of light. The one who is able to find it first would be declared as the Supreme God of the Universe. Lord Brahma rose up to find the top and Lord Vishnu went below earth into patala to find out the bottom of this column of light. Neither of them could find the top/bottom of this column of light. Both returned back to the place from where they started their journey. The voice from the pillar of light asked “Could you find my ends?”. Lord Vishnu truthfully accepted he couldn’t while Brahma’s ego came in between and he lied that he went upto the topmost end and he has reached and seen it. With a loud roar Lord Shiva/Rudra erupted from the brilliant column of light (the first appearance of Shivalinga in the form of column of brilliant light and fire) and cut of one of the original 5 heads of brahma (which was on top, therefore now Brahma has only 4 heads) as punishment for lying, while blessed Lord Vishnu for his truthfulness. Both Lord Brahma and Vishnu bowed in front of Shiva who emerged from this brilliant shining Shivalinga and declared Lord Shiva/Rudra as the Supreme Lord of the Universe.
This incident occurred on Krishna Chaturdashi (14th night, after Full moon/Poornima) of Magha/Falguna month (February). This day was the day when Shiva gave Darshan to the universe as huge, radiant, immeasurable Shivalinga which we celebrate as Mahashivaratri. So Shivaratri is the first appearance of Shiva as Shivalinga in the form of column of light and fire. He proclaimed that on this day he will appear in each person’s house who worships him with true Bhakti in the same time in midnight as he appeared millions of years back in front of Lord Brahma and Vishnu. This special time of appearance of Shiva is called “LINGODHBHAVA KALAM” (time of appearance of Shiva from the Shivalinga). See a picture of this form of Shiva in my facebook page photo section (www.facebook.com/vedaghosham). Now let me tell you what and how you should worship Lord Shiva in Mahashivaratri.
On 13th Feb 2018 which is Trayodashi (13th day after full moon) you should have only one meal by afternoon. When the Sun is about to set you should take a bath, wear fresh clothes and start preparation of Shiva pooja like arranging the Shivalinga/Shiva photo, flowers, lamp, dhoop (agarbatti), fruits, chandan, kumkum, karpoor (Camphor). If you have a Shivalinga keep the Shivalinga on an abhisheka peeth/large plate for Abhisheka (ceremonial bath) or if you have only a photo then no need of abhisheka, but put the photo on a wooden plank and decorate it with flowers.
From the sunset on 13th Feb 2018, to sunrise on 14th Feb 2018 you need to perform what is called 4 Prahar pooja or 4 Yama pooja in Shivaratri. What does this mean? Let us take for example the sunset on 13th Feb 2018 occurs at 06:30pm and sunrise on the next day will occur at 06:30am on 14th Feb 2018, this 12 hour duration should be divided in 4 halves. Each quarter is 1 Prahar/Yama. For each Prahar/Yama you have to repeat the entire Shiva pooja from start to end. Which means as per above example on 13th Feb 2018 evening from 06:30pm to 09:30pm will be the 1st Prahar/Yama pooja. From 09:30pm to 12:30am will be the 2nd Prahar/Yama pooja. From 12:30am to 03:30am will be 3rd Prahar/Yama pooja. And from 03.30am to 06:30am will be 4th Prahar or Yama pooja, thus will end on 14th Feb 2018 morning. Each Prahar or Yama we have to repeat the full abhisheka and pooja. Perform abhisheka to Shivalinga with sandalwood oil, panchagavya (prepared with a combination of milk, curd, ghee, cow urine and cow dung), panchamrut, ghee, milk, curd, honey, sugarcane juice, fruit juice (orange, mosambi, lemon), coconut water, sandalwood paste, vibhooti/bhasma and water. If you cannot get all these items, whichever you can manage to get you can perform abhiseka with it. This abhisheka cannot be done if you have a photo of Shiva, in which case you can keep all these items in front of the photo and dip a flower in each of these and keep in on the base of the photo of Lord. While performing abhisheka you can chant Sri Rudram/Chamakam or any Lord Shiva related mantras you know. If you do not know any of them do not worry as the most favourite mantra for Lord Shiva is the Shiva Panchakshari which is “Om Namah Shivaya” which you can keep repeating as you do the abhisheka. Then apply chandan, kumkum and then if you know different names of Lord Shiva (like Shiva Ashtottara shatanamavali/sahasranamavali, Rudra trishati etc which are also available on google search) you could perform archana (offering) with bilva leaf or flowers on the Shivalinga or the photo after each name you chant (For example “Om Rudraya Namaha” offer one bilva/flower. Then next name and so on…). If you don’t know all this then chant “Om Namah Shivaya” 108 times and offer bilva or flower after each time you chant it 108 times. Then show dhoop, ghee lamp, offer banana, coconut and other fruits along with other Prasad, show karpoor (camphor) and offer akshata (raw rice mixed with turmeric/haldi). This completes one set or 1 Prahar/Yama pooja. This entire set should be repeated 4 times as shown in my above example.
If you are due to some reason you are unable to follow or perform pooja 4 times in the 4 Prahars or Yamas then you should at least perform pooja during the “Lingodbhava Kalam” (the time of Shiva appeared as Shivalinga in the Universe, the brilliant column of light). For this Shivaratri the “Lingodhbhava kalam” is 12:26am to 01:17am (after 13th Midnight). This is the time when Shiva is present in each and every Shivalinga/photo on earth, as this is the exact time when Shiva appeared as Shivalinga.
So people who are unable to perform the 4 times pooja, should at least perform 1 time pooja during this time. If still this is not possible for you to do this, then you can visit a Shiva temple and participate in the Pooja there and stay awake the full night and come back home early morning.
And if still not possible to do any of the above then you could just stay awake to full night and chant mantras or slokas like Lingashtakam/Bilvashtakam/Shivashtakam if you know. If you search in google you will find all of these in audio and pdf. If you don’t know any of these then just chant the powerful “Om namah Shivaya” full night. Waking up and chanting the name will give you all the phal/punya of maintaining the complete Shivaratri Vrata Pooja.
On 14th Feb 2018, morning you can break your fast anytime after 07:10am. But it is important not to sleep on entire 14th also during day time. You can sleep only on 14th Feb 2018 night. If you are going to office and driving your own vehicle please be careful and do not drive yourself if your didn’t sleep the full night as you may fall asleep while driving. The sunset and the sunrise time for each of your cities can be found on google very easily and accordingly you could perform the poojas and obtain the blessings of Lord Shiva on this day.
