Jai Sri Rama, Respected members and experts in Dharma shastra, I am a Niyogi brahmin from Andhra. I am 22 and still not a dvija. Recently, I heard from a person on social media that upanayana is of no use for me and that I should do prayschitta for not getting upanayanam at the right age and that I am not eligible for any sadhanas or shastra adhyayanas. Is that true? What are the prayschittas for me? m I still a brahmin? did I lose my varna? My parents are planning to do upanayana next year.according to some people, Gayatri mantra Upasana will not be effective after 16 . Is that true? I am just confused.
Firstly the caste system classifying the entire population into four segments is TOTALLY misunderstood. Being a Brahmin, Kshatriyas, Vysya etc. refer to the human QUALITIES and not Castes. Thus, when one protects from violence, one's Kshatriyas forces come out, when one bargains, one's Vysya qualities surface etc. Bhagvan Sri Krishna has unequivocally mentioned that ALL humans are equal. Therefore your Sathvic qualities will always keep your Brahminical identity intact.
Then comes the question of Upa Nayanam and performing SandhyavandNam. The purpose of initiation while young is to push the rituals deep into a human mind. How many people that prevent you from wearing Yagnopavitram have performed Sandhyavandam without fail from the age of 7. And what right do I have to come out against these people - I have been performing Sandhyavandam three times a day without fail for the past 15 years and prior to that only sporadically for 30 years. I'm in no way better or worse than others, but I feel im qualified enough to reply to your query..
Getting initiated into UpaNayanam and beginning to perform Sandhyavandam now is perfectly acceptable in your instance. Why ? What is the purpose of Sandhyavandam. Maha Periyaval has mentioned it is to purify your own soul. It is not a prayer to an outside force, but the Savitru Mandala forces that reside inside you is what you are trying to connect with Goddess Savitri. Therefore when the desire comes from within you, that is the perfect time.
You have not crossed any limits, you have not committed any sins. My humble suggestion is, please pray to your Kula Devatha and your elders and start your initiation and please perform Sandhyavandam regularly. May Goddess Savitri Bless you and your family. May Maha Periyava who, irrespective of caste, has given Moksha to innumerable humans including priests, writers, flower vendors, grocery store owners, shepherd boy, house maids amongst others shower His Blessings upon you.
