SOME MARRIAGE RITES AND THEIR MEANINGS:-
SAPTHAPATHI ( THE RITE OF SEVEN STEPS)
While holding the bride's hand the groom walks seven steps around the holy fire with her. This is the most important part of the Marriage ceremony. Only when they walk these seven steps together is the marriage complete.With each step they take a vow.The belief is that when one walks seven steps with another one becomes the other's best friend
Ist Step (VOW ).
A pledge that they will provide a prosperous living for the household or the family that they would look after and avoid those that might hinder theirhealthy living.
2nd Step ( VOW )
During this step the bride and the groom promise that they would develop their physical ,mental and spiritual powers in order to lead a lifestyle that would be healthy.
3 rd Step (Vow).
During this step the couple promises to earn a living and increase their prosperity by righteous and proper means so that their materialistic wealth increases.
4 th Step (Vow)
The couple pledges to acuire knowledge,happiness and harmony by mutual love,respect,understanding and faith.
5 th Step (Vow).
The fifth vow is to expand their heredity by having children ,for whom they will be responsible They also pray to be blessed with healthy,honest,good and brave children
6 th Step (Vow)
This step round the sacred fire the couple pray for self control of the mind,body and soul and longevity of their martial relationship.
7 th and last Step ( VOW).
They promise that they will be true and loyal to each other and will remain companions and best friends for the life time
The Satpathi ceremony concludes with the prayer that the union is indissoluble. At the end of this ceremony the groom and bride become husband and wife. In Hindu marriage there is no question of separation of husband and wife. till the end
