Source: In the Presence of the Divine Narratives of experiences with Maha Periyaval – Volume 1 Translated by: Sujatha Vijayaraghavan
The couple was happy. They lacked nothing in life, except that they had one unfulfilled longing. The kind of lack that King Dasaratha experienced. The couple was not blessed with child. Every kind of expiatory rite had been performed at Ramesvaram. Nothing seemed to bear fruit. Was there any other possibility?
The couple came to Periyava. Vidyarthi Narayana Sastri, a close attendant of Periyava spoke on their behalf. “ The couple has performed every kind of prescribed ritual. They have not been blessed with a child.”
Periyava looked at the girl from a distance.” Why, my boy! Does that girl part her hair on the side of her forehead?”
“ Yes,” said Vidyarthi.
“The hair must be parted in the middle of the head. This is called ‘ simanta’ in Sanskrit. If the girl is to be blessed with the ritual of ‘simantam’ (before child-bearing), she must part her hair in the middle. If the hair is parted sideways, everything turns crooked. Tell her to part her hair in the middle and comb it.”
The girl did as she was told. She had twins the next year.
Did Periyava teach us the truth that one’s life becomes straight when one parts one’s hair straight in the middle?
