Dear Members,
I am posting below an English translation of the above Tamil post from 'Deivathin Kural' :--
It is wrong to advise people to give up celebrating ‘Rathotsavam’ ( Chariot Festival----celebration of pulling the chariot where the Deities are installed with decoration as a part of temple festivals) and ask them to do social service. WE NEED BOTH. Nowadays, those who advise the people to give up Divine duties and go for social service quote the following passage from ‘THIRUMANDIRAM’ by poet Thirumoolar :--
The meaning of the above verse is:-- The services and charities done to people are equivalent to The Pooja performed to God. Bagavan, in Sreemad Bhagavatham, also says that service rendered to the world visualizing it as ‘Bagavath Swaroopa’ (form of God) is equivalent to performing Pooja to Him. ( Kapila Avatar—111.29)
THIS DOES NOT MEAN THAT THERE IS NO NEED FOR POOJA AND FESTIVAL. What is the use of rendering service to people and making food, clothes and other comforts available to them, and allowing them to enjoy these and perish WITHOUT realizing the Supreme Truth ? Neither Thirumoolar nor Krishna Bagavan have opined that it should be left that way. The permanent benefit of all these must be to make them realize God. The purpose of all social services in helping people get food, get medical treatment when afflicted by diseases and give them education which will nurture their wisdom, is to benefit from Temple visits, and conducting and participating in temple festivals. Ayurvada Sastram advises against giving medical aid to atheists and extending their life spans, lest they should only add to their sins. Therefore, the highest service for mankind is to render physical help to temple renovation, or build a compound wall to a temple etc.
There are some services which truly stem out of one’s soul. For example, Printing and distributing books written by great souls, books about great souls, Puranas, books of Stotras, Devotional songs etc. to the inmates of prisons and patients in the hospitals is a great service. If the concerned authorities permit, religious events such as Bhajans, ‘Pravachanam’ and talks on religions can also be conducted.
