सानन्दं सदनं सुताश्च सुधियः कान्ता न दुर्भाषिणी
सन्मित्रं सधनं स्वयोषिति रतिश्चाSSज्ञापराः सेवकाः |
आतिथ्यं शिवपूजनं प्रतिदिनं मिष्टान्नपानं गृहे
साधोः संगमुपासते हि सततं धन्यो गृहस्थाश्रमः ||
Saanandam sadanam sutaasch sudhiyah kaantaa na durbhaashini.
Sanmitram sadhanam swayoshiti ratishchaagyaaparaah.
Aatithyam shivapoojanam pratidinam mshtaannpaanam grahe'
Saadhoh sangmupaasate hi satatam dhanyo grahasthaashramah.
Saanand = comfortable, joyful. Sadan = residence. Sutaascha = children.
Sudhiyah = wise and learned. Kaantaa = wife. Na = not Durbhaashini = rude and ill speaking,
Sanmitram = good and reliable friends. Sadhanam = rich. Swayoshiti = one's wife.
Rati = sexual pleasure. Swayoshiti Ratih = being faithful to wife in sexual matters.
Aagyaaparaa = obedient. Sevakaah = servants. Aatithyam = hospitable to the guests.
Shiva poojanam = worshiping Lord Shiva. Pratidinam = every day. Mishtannpaanam = enjoying tasty food. Grahe = in the household. Saadhoh = noble persons. Sangamupaasate = sang + upaaste. Sang = company. Upaste = keeping the company of, sit near. Hi = surely.
Satatam = always, continuous. Dhanyo = blessed. Grahasthaashramah = family life.
i.e. A person's family life is peaceful and successful if he has a comfortable house to live in, his children are wise and learned, his wife is not rude and ill speaking, he has good and reliable friends, he is faithful to his wife in sexual matters, has obedient servants, is hospitable to guests, and every day worships Lord Shiva and enjoys tasty food, and always keeps the company of noble persons.
Surely blessed be such a householder.
( In Hindu Religion the life span of a person is divided into four orders namely Brahmacharyaashram, Grahasthaashram, Vanaprastha and Sanyaas, each order being of 25 years. The first order is assigned for education, the second one for getting married and raising a family, the third one for selfless service to the society and the last one for renouncing the worldly life and doing meditation. In this Subhashit all the pre-requisites for a successful and comfortable family life have been beautifully outlined by the author.).
