D. Kural - Page 577 Volume 3?
Arjuna with all power in his command, embarked on war.
He was being true to his “Varna Dharma”’
Fighting a just war was his Dharma.
Even for a fleeting second, he did not question his action.
His decision to fight was voluntary.
His act was an implicit, unquestioned call of duty.
Yet when he faced his relatives in the war, his heart sank.
There seemed to some force, which seem to push him in a different direction.
(Hold one by the neck and throw one out!!)
Yet there seems to be some force which seems to hold us by our neck and push us in a different direction.
This action of Arjuna (pushed in different direction) does not have sanction of his mental faculty.
In fact his mental faculties resist such action.
Yet this unknown force seems to push him in a direction not chosen by him.
What is that force?
This unknown force is characterised by the following traits. It makes him believe
Righteous action adopted by him are not right.
Wrong actions action are right.
However his mental faculties are strong enough to make him understand, the presence of such force.
He however does not know the “Why and What” of this force.
Arjuna asks Lord Krishna to explain the “Why and What” of this unknown force.
अथ केन प्रयक्तोयं पापं चरति पुरुषः
अनिच्छन्नपि वार्ष्णेय बलादिव नियोजितः
Atha kena prayaktoyam charati purushaha
Anichannapi varshneya baladiva viniyojitaha
अथ - In spite of.-
In spite of mind wanting to
- Perform Dahama as prescribed by the Shastras,
- Assuming the non-existance of mind, for the sake of this argument.
प्रयक्तोयं - प्रयुक्त + अयं
अयं पुरुषः - (For interpreting Ayam in Pryaktoyam is combined with Purushaha)
अयं पुरुषः - This Jeeva
Meaning so far
In spite of wanting to perform duties as per Varna Dharma, this Jeeva
अनिच्छन्न - Applying it’s intellect, not desiring to perform action contrary to what is prescribed.
Mind thinks deeply on the issue.
It also takes a correct decision about right and wrong.
Yet this Jeeva, involuntarily takes action contrary to what mind has decided.
Point to be noted is that, mind has taken the right decision
The parameters are the Dharma as prescribed.
Yet Action are contrary.
केन - By whom?
प्रयुक्तः - prodded, pushed, forced to do
There is some force which is holding me by the neck and pushing to do things contrary to my belief.
बलादिव - बलात + इव
बलात ्- Forcefully, Molested.
नियोजितः इव - the word Niyojitaha is derived from the root युज (Yuj)
युज (Yuj) means to bind together, unite.
The word Yog means binding the mind together from going astray.
We use cows to cultivate the land. YOKE is used to bind the cow and Yoke
YOKE itself seems to derived from the word, YOG.
The word योजित (to think) is process by which we bind the mind to a particular issue.
Cow is bound to the YOKE to cultivate the land.
Mind also needs to be bound, to cultivate the habit on being in communion with Paramatma.
Therefore the word योजित (Yojita) refers to “The State of being driven”
When the letter नि (NI) is added before any word, it lays more stress on the word that follows it.
Therefore नियोज means “well driven”,”Pushed Well”
The meaning so far:
By whom is the JEEVA forcefully, (propelled) driven to
पापं चरति - Performs Para
The full meaning
In site of the mind, not consenting to such an act (the mind actually knows it is wrong),
there is an external force,
which holds a man by the neck,
forcefully makes perform an act of sin.
What is that force?
One must analyse the word the usage of the word forcefully pushed to Sin, by Arjuna.
If we carefully list all the sins from various source (Manu Smriti...etc), the list will turn out to be huge.
Arjuna is convinced that no man can ever commit such sins, on his own, with meticulous planning and execution.
He is also convinced, that such sins committed by men, are beyond their own control.
अनिच्छन्न - refers to actions performed by men, which are beyond their control, thought and ability to curb them.
There is yet another point to be noted.
He asking Lord Krishna, “Which is that Force?”
He is not asking “How such force could be subdued?”
His question is simply this.
Which is that force, which prods men to commit sin?
Which is that force, which forcefully pushes a man to commit sin, in spite of his own opposition to it.

janami dharmam na cha me pravrutthih janamyadharmam na cha me nivrutthih

I know what DHARMA is, but do not have the courage to practice it.
