NAMASKARAMS ... YAJUR UPAKARMA is the original name of the function held today. But in tamil they call it as AVANI AVITTAM. Today is neither AVANI nor AVITTAM. Avani month is starting only on 17th of August and Avittam in Avani falls only on 30th of August. Today is Aadi Uthraadam. Can anyone clarify this pls. THANKS

Welcome to the Kanchi Periva Forum, Shri Chandhiramouli.
And you have a very valid and interesting question that might be in the minds of many but not usually asked.
Though this has come to be called as "Avani Avittam", originally it used to be "Sraavana Sravishta" or more specifically "Sraavana Pournima". Sravishta in sanskrit/malayalam is called by the name "Avittam" in Tamil. Generally, Avani coincides with Sraavana masam as well.
What is critical for the Upaakarma is the presence of the Pournima in the Sraavana month (which is based on the Chaandramana - or the lunar calendar), and not the nakshatra as such - which sometimes coincides with Sravishta (Today is Uthraadam/sravanam - Sravishta comes tomorrow - on Gayathri Japam day).
In Tamilnadu, we have assigned the name based on usually mapped combination of Avani & Avittam, but we must remember that it is actually "Sraavana Pournima" that matters.
Hope this helps. Please feel free to ask if you need any further clarity.

Here is what Brahmasri Rajagopala Ganapatigal has to say about the importance of Yajur Upakarma. This also indicates why Sraavana Pournima has a significance in this matter:
The most important karma for a Brahman, i.e., Upakarma or Avani Avittam as it is popularly known, will be observed on Aug 1, 2012. There is a general belief that the main event in Upakarma is changing the Upaveetham/ poonal. In reality, this is but a minor part of the Upakarma. The main event or purpose of Upakrama is Vedarambha.
To understand better, let us look at the meaning of the word “Upakarma”. According to The Practical Sanskrit English Dictionary, Upakarma means “Preparation, beginning, commencement”. The prefix “adhyaya” is used in the sankalpa . Adhyaya means “learning, reading”.Quoting from the same dictionary, Adhyaya Upakarma is “a ceremony performed before commencing to read the Veda after the monsoons”.
In the past, the learning of Vedas was done for a period of six months every year, ending on Pushya Pournami (Thai Pournami). The stopping of studying Vedas is called “Adhyaya Utsarjana”. For the next six months till the Shravana Pournami, the student studies shastras.
Studying of Vedas starts again in Shravana month. (Avani). This restarting of studying of Vedas is a karma which is peformed as Upakarma. Thus, the most important part of Upakarma is the Veda Arambha that the Sastrigal/Vadhyar will perform after changing of Upaveetham. Actually, over the years, the practice of “adhyaya utsarjana” has stopped. That is why, on the day of Upakarma, the “kamokarishit japam” is performed.
The sankalpa of the Kamokarishit Japam translates to “ For not having performed the Adhyaya Utsarjana, I am doing this Japam as prayashchittam”. Therefore, this is also an important karma. For completion of the Upakarma both the Kamokarishit Japam and Vedarambham must be performed.

Maha periava thiruvadigal charanam.
Dear Mr Chandramouli, it is really a valid question. The explanation given by the moderator is so correct and useful for all, those who do not raise the question.
Usually, Pournami of every tamil month has a very very valid day, to worship Ambal. (Remember Thirukkadaiyur Abirami pattar- Abirami Andhadhi ).
For example, Chithirai tamil month pournami -- Chitra pournami--Madurai Meenakshi Amman Thirukkalyanam.
Vaikasi tamil month pournami--Lord Murugan Avadhara day.
Ani tamil month pournami -- Guru pournima.
Iyppasi tamil month pournami--Anna Abishekam.
Likewise, every year, after ADI tamil month after New moon (Amavasai), which pournami falls on with Sravana (Thiruvonam) star, that day is taken as Avani Avittam. This year, 1st August, Uthradam star follows by Thiruvonam star falls on pournami, hence yajur ubhakarma/avani avittam, is celebrated.
I give below some more additional informations to you to know about pournami.
hope, your are clear now.

Very nice educative explanation with logical explanation.
One should try to understand our elders action on any has very valid reasons and not the namings one come across around us in general.
Even for naming a child, people start searching in the net and choose one that sounds good and know the meaning too. In the absence of these gadget it used to be their family deity or their elders name in the family starting from fathers and mothers side. That was the reason many similar names in a family who has more sons and daughters.
With many follow one to two children family concept and follow name and family name concept repetition of names are avoided. Embarrassment of father and son called by same name at a common place away from Tamil Nadu and else where!!
Our old practice of first initial with ones native place, one can hear first name is addressed in the airport and other announcement to call a person as Kallidaikuruchi, Karikudi, Kumbhakonam etc!!
Things are changing according to change of time and practices followed!!!!
