The Strength of Shiva; Narayana’s Sister
Since Ambal occupies half the physical frame of Parameswaran who blazed Kaman, She shares the third eye and burns to ash the dross desires of all living beings in the universe. Mooka Kavi repeatedly says, ‘’You who imbued Siva with love, smashed the desires of devotees ‘’.
She destroyed lust because She is the energy force in Shiva who razed Kaman. She is also the sister of Narayana. Narayana is actually the father of Manmatha. Many people only know Brahma to be the son of Mahavishnu. But Manmatha is also His son. When He appeared as Mohini before Parameswara, Ayyapa Shastha was born. Ayyapa who was born out of Shiva-Vishnu union is like Subramaniar who was born in Shiva-Shakthi union. Therefore Ayyapa is the embodiment of universal wisdom. But Brahma is engaged in creation, causing births. Manmatha, who provokes desires to bring about procreation, is the other son of Mahavishnu. He has the capability of ruling over all beings by afflicting them on an erotic love!
I said Kamakshi who gave life to Manmatha will banish desire. In the same light will Mahavishnu who created Manmatha, bless us to get rid of desires? Surely He will bless us. Who is Sri Rama? We say that utterance of the word ‘’Rama’’ will keep Kama [desire] away. By chanting ‘’Rama, Rama, Rama’’ a great many spiritual aspirants had kept at bay the six-folded dross desires. You may ask how come this is possible, given the father-son relationship between Mahavishnu and Manmatha. It is because of the great reverence the son has towards the father that he does not come near Him; he will not wag his tail. This is how Tulasidas, in a lighter vein explains a deep philosophy. Manmatha out of fear will not come near Siva’s devotees. Manmatha due to his intense respect for Mahavishnu, will never display his mischievous pranks to His devotees.
Mahavishnu took the twin avathars of Nara and Narayana. They were doing penance in Badrikashramam. Celestial damsels came to distract them. Then Nara got very irritated. Though He was Narayana incarnated, true to His human sensibilities He was angered. A mere growl ‘’Hum’’ will be sufficient to reduce the celestial beauties to ashes. Fearing this, they left Nara and ran to the region where Narayana was doing penance. They now started their playful tricks. Narayana does not have even a speck of desire. This apart there is no anger like Nara too. Therefore, laughing and in a playful mood He patted His thigh. From His thigh sprang up Urvasi [ Uru-thigh]. On seeing this exquisite, matchless beauty, the heavenly maidens felt ashamed. They realized that their amorous advances will be of no avail. Possessing within Him such peerless feminine charm that humbled even the heavenly beauties, Narayana continues pursuing His severe austerities without a blemish! Can it ever be possible to entice Him who is the base and source of all astounding beauty? This is the significant message conveyed.
Since Brahma and Manmatha originated from Vishnu, He has the power to ward off birth and desire.
Ambal, sister of Narayana and being the energy force of Shiva, burned Manmatha to ashes. It was She who reinstated Manmatha again by imparting fresh life into him. When She can give or take out the life force from him, it establishes the fact that he is under Her supreme control. Hence he will not approach Her devotees as well. This explains how the devotees who worship Her, conquer desires.
When something bad occurs we say ‘’Shiva Shiva’’. When we hear something objectionable, we say Shiva Shiva’’ and close our ears. Mooka Kavi on seeing a very good, wonderful thing exclaims ‘’Shiva Shiva’’ instead of “Aaha Aaha’’.
‘’Siva Siva paschyanthi samam
Sri Kamakshi kadakshitha: purusha:’’
He says “What wonders happen in the case of those, upon whom Kamakshi casts Her auspicious eyes! Shiva Shiva’’. That wonder is “What all appears to us as being different, seems to be the same for them’’, says the astonished Mooka Kavi.
Nowadays we talk much about all being equal and proclaim equality. We say this, not with wisdom but with political motivation. In reality this claim of equality mostly remains a falsehood.
The wisdom of Adwaitha philosophy is realized by the blessed one who obtains Kamakshi’s compassionate gaze. To him whatever is seen, all appear as the same One and Only Parabrahman. Truly he alone has the vision of truth, which is the vision of equality. Mookar tells us that to such a person the home and the forest are one and the same.
He does not have even the slightest hatred. Therefore the friend and the foe become equal to him! He is also completely devoid of desires. Mookar says that to such a person, the lustrous red lips of a young maiden and the clod of clay become equal in their appeal.
“Loshtam cha yuvathi bimboshtam’’ observes Mookar with an apt simile.
Loshtam means clay; Oshtam means lips. [the animal with a large protruding lip is Oshtram; this is what in Tamizh known as Ottai, Ottagam [camel]. ’Bimbam’, means red gourd; ‘bimboshtam’ — lips that are red like the red gourd [kovai pazham].
Mookar’s comparison reminds us exactly of what Baghawan had said in Gita, “Yogi sama loshtaachama kaanchana:’’ Baghawan implying the greed for gold, says, ‘’To a yogi, mud and material gold are equal‘’, while Mookar’s statement has reference to the lust for women.
Objects that can arouse desire, hatred, sorrow and fear will never ever lure the staunch devotees of Ambal.
It is enough to fully meditate on Ambal at all times without any afflictions , such as desire or hatred; that’s what liberation — Moksham is all about. The feeling that “She is different and we are different” vanishes, and when we attain the stage, where She becomes one with us, that state is liberation, Moksham.
In the beginning stage we may consider Her as being different. At that time we must tightly hold Her lotus feet and pray to Her. Slowly and consistently, we must dissolve ourselves in Her. Even if we take little effort, it is sufficient. She Herself will lift us up and shower Her Grace on us. She by Herself, will demolish the barriers between Her and us, and will make us one with Her.
