Who does not like stories told through the form of melodious music?
In India, the art of story telling through music flourished in many forms. One such form that is very special to Tamil Nadu is the 'Villu Paatu.' This singing art is performed with the key accompaniments of a specially-made stringed bow (Villu) and a small hand-held drum called 'Udukku.' In his own inimitable way, Periva once described, " Villu Paatu is an art symbolizing our national integrity. The bow used in it reminds one of Rameswaram-Dhanushkoti (Dhanush means bow). The hand-held drum reminds one of Lord Shiva of Kailash Mountain. Because you remember Lord Shiva from the Mountains (Himalayas in the North) to Rameswaram in the southern most part of India, the Villu Paatu represents national integrity." Apart from offering musical melody to listeners, such rare and ancient musical arts have great potential to serve as powerful mediums to unite people.
