Mahaperiava is known for His strict adherence to ACHAARAM. But, when it came to dealing with children, He was a different person. SriMatam had seen thousands of children coming for Periava's Darsanam. In different attires---children in different school uniforms, with different hair styles, speaking different languages, belonging to different religions . To every one of them, He used to talk, asking their names and giving them fruits as Prasadams. Without worrying as to how many of these children will follow our Hindu culture, He felt happy by just seeing them!
Ra.Ganapathy anna has narrated the following episode in his book 'Maithreem Bhajatha", published by Divya Vidhya Padhippakam.
On one such occasion, when He was resting in His famous 'maena' , a little girl came and stood near the 'maena'.
" what is your name?"-----Periava.
"Deepa'-----replied the girl, in a shrill voice.
Periava could not hear it properly. " I didn't hear what you said. Say it aloud"--- said He.
" D for Donkey, E for egg, another E for Elephant,, P for People, A for Ant "-----said the girl!
Although Periava was surprised, He exaggerated His surprise, and said, " Good! Good! You are very smart!"
The girl felt very happy at this.
Periava continued, " you said it very nicely. but, instead of adding donkey and egg with your name, shall I say it in another way? I will connect your name with great people and tell you! ok? Instead of the five alphabets D--e--e--p--a, in your name, I will make it easier with four alphabets, D--i--p--a."
" D for Devi. Do you know who is Devi? God will come in different forms. When He comes in the form of Mother God, with full of Love, He is called Devi. Have you seen 'Amman Kovil' in temples ?"
" Yes, I have seen"---said the child.
"The 'Amman' there is the Devi. Now ,say this, 'D for Devi' !"
" D for Devi"---the child repeated.
'Good! Now, I for Ilango. I--la--n--go--. Say that!"
" who is Ilango?"-----the child queried.
"Ilango is the very famous poet in Tamizh, who wrote the story of a lady by name 'Kannagi' , completely in poetry form. It is a very nice story. I don't have the time now to tell you that story. Ask your father to buy that book for you. I for Ilango. Say it!"
"I for Ilango"----repeated the child.
"Then P for Prahlada..."
" I know, I know! He is the boy devotee! God came in the form of lion and killed His father, who was His enemy!''---the child blurted out!
" Good! Good! you know it well!. Lastly A for Anjaneya! Do you know Anjaneya?"
" No"----replied the child.
" Hanumar?'---Periava.
"I know. The Monkey God!" exclaimed the child.
"Same person! He is also known as Anjaneyar. Say it now!"
"A for Anjaneya!"---repeated the child.
" You said it correctly! Come on, have this."--Periava threw a sweet cube( Kalkandu) to the child.
" D for Devi, I for Ilango......"saying this, the child ran away happily.
