In the subject of Carnatic music, the three great names often referred to as “The Mummurthis or The Trinity of Carnatic Music” are: Sri Thyagaraja Swamigal, Sri Shyama Sastrigal and Sri Muthuswamy Dikshitar. Their compositions are a unique combination of lyrical splendour, musical magnificence and bhakthi, all blended together to give the listener, the pleasures of Carnatic music combined with a great spiritual experience.
Likewise, when we talk about Sampradhaya Bhajan, we have three great personalities whom we may refer to as “The Mummurthis or The Trinity of Sampradhaya Bhajans.” These three saintly persons are:
1. Bhagavannama Bodhendra Swamigal (the 59th Sankaracharya in the line of Kanchi Acharyas) who attained siddhi in 1692 A.D. at Govindapuram;
2.Thiruvisanallur Shridhara Venkateswara Iyyavaal, a great saint praised by Periva. He is believed to have brought the sacred river Ganga to the well in his home; and
3. Marudaanallur Sadguru Venkataramadesika Swamigal, who had contributed immensely to Dhivya Naama Sangeerthana and Bhajans. He traveled the length and breath of India and collected many songs composed by saints from various states in different languages.
The tradition that was followed by Marudaanallur Swamigal, since 17th century, is still considered the forerunner of Sampradhaya Bhajans. Based on his vast collection of songs, Marudaanallur Swamigal derived a padhathi (methodology) for performing the Bhajans thus leading to the evolution of present day "Sampradhaya Bhajan."
Is there anyone in our large group who can provide us the pictures of this great trinity of Sampradhaya Bhajan?
Appreciate your interest and thank you.
