_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Evidences for Divine incarnate in Veda, Ithihasa, Puranas
If it is found in the books of Shankara Vijayam, that Shambhu, the Parameswara, himself incarnated as Shankara, a question may crop up. It could be said that “The persons who wrote the books of Shankara Vijayam would certainly be devotees of Shankaracharya. They would be the people who are followers of his philosophy and would have taken him as their Guru. Apart from generally claiming that He is our Guru, befittingly deserving our love and devotion, it would be natural for them to go further and rejoice that He is a real incarnation. The praise showered out of love, need not be true. Therefore, tell us whether there are evidences that the Acharya is the incarnation of Eswara, apart from the books on Shankara Vijayam. That is, instead of being said as those written by followers of his religion, tell us if there is evidence in any other famous book written in general. We will take that as proof”.
There are many like that also. More than everything, evidence through sacred knowledge transmitted orally by the Brahmanas from generation to generation (Shruti), itself is there. Don’t we question, whether it is a ‘Statement of Vedas’? Such a statement of Vedas itself is there to say that Acharya is an incarnate. Instead of asserting directly, it has been stated a little indirectly. If what is stated is understood, it is more interesting than asserting directly.
Mentioning the two words, Shambhu and Shankara, did I not say that the person who was Shambhu, later on came as Shankara? These two words are mentioned in the same order, first Shambhu, then Shankara, followed by Panchakshara, in one place in the Vedas. It is in Yajur Veda. Before I talk about it, let me show a proof from Rig Veda, the first among the Vedas.
Even to talk about Rig Veda, which is considered the most ancient scripture, we will have to start from 17-18 BC centuries.
There was a great soul by name, Bhaskararayar, who lived for 96 years between the end of 17th century and the end of 18th century1.
The name he had obtained through initiation from his Guru, was Bhasura Nandanathar. The name Bhaskara, refers to Sun God. Bhasura refers to only brightness. Quite apt to these names, he was intellectually, a very bright person. He was referred to as Vidhvat Surya. Particularly, for Mantra Sastras, he was considered the foremost authority. Many of the materials that we have got now from Mantra Sastras, are only those revealed by him. He was a great devotee of Ambal. While he has written important books on the procedure for Sri Vidya puja, the commentary (Bhashyam) written by him for Lalitha Sahasra Nama, is considered as the ‘authority’, a special privilege bestowed upon by the devotees of Sri Vidhya.
That great person has written verses about Acharya also. From one of those verses only, we come to know that it is mentioned indirectly in the Rig Veda itself that our Acharya is an incarnation of Paramashiva. I will tell the verse.
Sri Raamam Prathi Pushkaraathipa-Mahaayaakshena Vedathraya-
Vyaakyaanaavasarae Visishyaa Gaditham Sri Vishnu Dharmottarae|
Ethaam Thenum-Upahvayaami Sudhukhaam-Ithyurkh-Gatam-Sankaraa-
Chaaryam Sishya-Sadhushtayena Sahitham Vande Gurunaam Gurum.
It has offered respects to our Acharya, as the Guru for all gurus, saying,
“Vande Gurunaam Gurum Sankaraachaaryam”.
Since it is starting with “SriRamam”, it can be gauged that Acharya has been linked with Sri Rama. What is the link?
The story of Rama does not end with what is told in Ramayana. There are other books which convey things which are not covered in Ramayana. “Yoga Vasishtam” or “Gnana Vasishtam”, is one of them. Another one is “Vishnu Dharmottaram”. This is the book referred to in the second line of the verse. While Rama demonstrated living as a human being, He had received teachings about the two modes, Pravruthi and Nivruthi from two people. He obtained instructions of higher knowledge on Adwaita, which is the pinnacle of Nivruthi path, from Sage Vasishta. That is “Gnana Vasishtam”. People who study Vedantha, are familiar with this book. The book which details the teachings obtained by Rama on Karma (Pravruthi) mode, did not become that popular. That is “Vishnu Dharmottaram”. That book is referred as addendum to Vishnu Purana. The person who gave these teachings to Rama, was a Yaksha, by name, Pushkara. This is mentioned in the verse, as “Pushkara-Abhitha-Mahaayakshena”. As he is referred to as “Mahaa Yaksha’, his greatness can be known. If he was in a position to give advice to the incarnate, Rama himself, would he not be really great? Just like there are Kinnaras, Kimpurushas, Gandharvas, etc., among deva community, Yakshas were also one. The king of Yakshas, was Kubera. Pushkara, who belonged to that caste, was the one who taught the Karma Kanda of Rig-Yajur-Sama Vedas to Rama. While giving the meaning of the mantras of Rig Veda itself, there is a mention about Acharya, in one of the places.
Ëthaam Thenum-Upahvayaami Sudhukaam”,
which comes in the verse, refers to one Rig Veda mantra only2. This is the Rig (Veda mantra) which describes that how Eswara is protecting the world, in the same way as a cow would feed its milk to its calf. In Vishnu Dharmottaram, when Pushkara gave the meaning of this mantra to Rama, He says that there is a mention here that when a time will come when the Adwaita truth is forgotten in the earthly world, Paramashiva would incarnate as Shankaracharya Swami to feed the milk of Supreme knowledge and bestow his benevolence to the world, just like a mother cow would come to protect its calf by giving its milk.
It has not stopped with only saying about the incarnation of Acharya. It has also stated that he would incarnate flanked by 4 disciples. Bhaskaracharya quotes “…Avadheernam Puvi Sankaraachaaryam Sishyaich-Chathurbis-Sahitham”.
Even if a great scholar like Bhaskaracharya says a thing on his own, it will, by itself, have lot of value. Matters that are dealt with in scriptures, treatises (grantham) like Vishnu Dharmottaram, will also have value on their own. No need to mention, if something is stated in the Vedas. That itself would do! Whereas here, when Bhaskaracharya points out to us that Pushkara, the great Yaksha is quoting that our Bhagawath Padal in the Puranas, the value of the matter becomes thrice greater.
1Elaborate description of Sri Charanas on Bhashyakara, may be published in one of the books to be brought out.
2Rig Veda: First mandala, 164th Suktha, 26th mantra
