Kamakshi’s Splendour
The force behind the tasks of creation, sustenance, and destruction is the one ‘Parashakti. Tureeyam (तुरीयम्), the fourth state that exists beyond these three is also known as ‘Chathurtham’, ‘Sivam’, ‘Adwaitam’, and ‘Shantam’ – according to the Mandukya Upanishad. It is also known as ‘Brahmam’.
Since there is nothing except ‘that’, it is known as Adwaitam. It is colourless – like the pure crystal (spatikam). This spatikam which is the Siva swaroopam is also the red hued Kameshwari – Kamakshi. That which existed as one, manifests as many and appears as Kameshwari. In addition to manifesting itself as many, it also protects all of them – as the compassionate mother. It is also the maya that makes humans believe that the many faceted world is real. As Gnanambika, It also redeems the humans from this maya and dissolves them in the one and only Adwaita. Its magnificence is beyond our comprehension.
‘If ‘Brahmam’ signifies ‘Tureeyam’, then, Kamakshi the power behind the Brahmam, is the Tureeya Vastu (तुरीय वस्तु)’ says Sri Adi Sankara of Her in the Soundarya Lahari (Tureeya kaapitvam, Sloka 97). The Siva Swaroopam that is Brahmam, is beyond the tasks of creation, sustenance, and destruction and remains static. Performing the tasks of creation, sustenance, and destruction, but remaining unaffected by them and remaining beyond them is Parashakti Kameshwari. These three tasks are because of Her maya. It is through maya that She propels the Universe. ‘mahamaya viswam brahmayasi’(महामाया विश्वम् भ्रमयसि) says Sri Adi Sankara (Soundarya Lahari – 97). Though She is the Mahamaya, She is the ‘Parabrahma Mahishi’ – the consort of the Brahmam itself – says he (Soundarya Lahari –97).
If Brahmam is the only ultimate one, then how can it have a wife? Do not all these things that exists come from the Brahmam? Is it not because of some force that the static Brahmam seems to have moved and created everything? That force is Kameshwari, the consort of Brahmam. Mahans who have personally experienced Parashakti’s blessings and motherly love describe Her as Kameshwari.
Saraswati is Brahma’s wife. Brahma creates this world; Saraswati grants the ability to poets to create from their imagination. Mahalakshmi, who grants wealth, is the wife of Maha Vishnu who protects this world. Parvathi is the force behind the Samhara Murthy Rudra. Parashakti Kamakshi is beyond these three tasks. Whose consort could she be? She is the consort of Parabrahmam. She is the peaceful ‘Brahmapathni without any gunas or actions. She is also the Mahamaya who steers this world through all gunas and all activities. ‘There is no boundary to this glory (nisseema mahima – निस्सीम महिमा) (97); It cannot be understood (duradhigama – दुरधिगम)’ (97) says Sri Adi Sankara in the Soundarya Lahari – about the greatness of Ambal.
If one were to get immersed in the power that spins this world through all movements, can one attain joy and peace? On contemplation we understand that ‘It’ is able to stir the world only because It is eternally peaceful and joyful. Earlier I had mentioned that the individual too creates, sustains, and destroys in his states of dream, wakefulness, and sleep. Even while the individual is asleep, there is a force within him that is awake and keeps him alive. He wakes up the next morning only because of this force. This fourth state – Tureeya Vastu – is ever peaceful. While in deep sleep, there is no sorrow; only joy. But if that peaceful ‘thing’ were to leave his body, all his activities come to an end! In essence, ‘that’ which drives all his activities is peaceful and static.
Similarly, Parashakti who is the base for all lives in this world is eternally peaceful. If we were to worship Her and immerse ourselves in Her, we too will obtain eternal peace.
