Kavi Samraat Sri Viswanatha satyanarayana garu is considered one of the greatest stalwarts in the telugu literary world. Even a person with little knowledge about telugu sahitya would know about the greatness of sri viswanatha. His poem 'Ramayana kalpavriksham' earned him the prestigious jnanpeeth award. This article originally authored by his son viswanatha pavani sastry relates to the poets experiences with the great acharya.
As mentioned in my earlier post, sri ratna prasad challapalli garu has rendered yeoman service by collecting articles from various telugu newspapers and bringing them in the form of books like satavarsha sekharam. The book is present in pdf form in the Internet. Readers who can read telugu can access the books freely.
Sruti smriti puranokta dharma marga ratam gurum!
Bhaktaanam hitavaktaaram namasye chitta suddhaye!
This incident happened in the late 1950's. It was the home of sri viswanatha satyanarayana. A man came and asked the poet a copy of 'swarganiki nichenalu'( ladders to heaven). He replied" they are sold out ".
"When will the book be reprinted ?"
"God knows"
"Please sir, I urgently need a copy of the book!", the person pleaded.
"What is so urgent in reading the book? "
" Kanchi swami asked me to read it "
"What ?"
"Yes sir ,recently when I went to kanchipuram for darsan of acharya ,I asked for his opinion on the fake swamijis. Acharya commanded me to read your book. He told it would reveal his opinion. That is why I came like this ."
With tears in his eyes , sri viswanatha parted him with the only copy of the book he had and sent him away.
Recalling this incident a few days later ,my father told me " See my child !How great are mahapurushas. The great acharya doesn't have the need to read these books which I am writing for common folk. Even then do you think sri charana read my book? Who knows ? The acharya is renowned to be a maha siddha . By his mere wish, all the vishayas in my book would be revealed to him !"
While he was speaking so , I could see tears in my father's eyes . My father felt happy for the only reason that the great paramacharya of kanchi mentioned his book. I am a direct witness to this incident.
The great acharya graced the town of vijayawada by camping at the labbipet venkateshwara swami temple. ( Akhil: I have heard from elders that during sri charana's camp in those days, he would circambulate the shrine 11 times every day. People from nearby towns and villages would throng the temple to do pradakshina along with his holiness. Even now a vow to do pradakshina in the temple is considered to be wish fulfilling. Such incidents stand a testimony to acharya pada's anugraha. )
In those days, my father had darsan of acharya . My father composed a poem in samskruta bhasha - Devi Trisathi. He recited some slokas from this work.
As he was reciting the slokas , acharya was in a state of contemplation. My father completed reciting, sri charana was still in dhyana, closing his eyes.
My father thought " Oh my god! I worked so hard to compose the poem .Did acharya reject them ?" Thinking so he did sashtanga and left the place.
As he was leaving the temple, someone came and told him " Acharya is calling you !". He again removed his upper shirt and went to acharya sannidhi.
Sri Charana told my father :
" Did u feel bad that I didn't hear your slokas ? I heard them . You have the sampoorna daya of Devi. That is why I went into into samadhi hearing your slokas ". My father recalling this incident , told me " See my child! This great acharya is an epitome of selflessness and love !".
I conclude this essay with some slokas from the poem :
Sayamvela vikasita
navamalli kusuma mandahasasya
dhavali karoti deham
devi haalahala galasya!
Aachandra navachandrika vimalakanti bhagirathi
navatnatamirochusha sivanavaartha sampadini
kadamba vana vaasini spurati kaachid
anandini
pramaa vimalitonmani charama bhaga lokeswari!
Nava madhukala mada bambhara
Parishat sevita kadamba sumaveni
sarvani madagaja
bandhuragati raayati jagadamba!
