I have read that one should not shave their beard themselves (i.e one should go to a barber for a shave). How frequently this has to be done? In other words, going to barber everyday is not possible and I also have read another statement that contradicts which is Brahmins should not grow beard (only during shradda or asoucham). I have observed that acharyas also grow beard and shave it off after sometime. Is there a rule that they follow as to how long they will grow beard and hair before getting it shaved. Can elite members clarify ?
Secondly on what days one is not supposed to have a hair cut or shave? In US, the barber shops don't open till 9 or 10 and most people do in the evenings.

Hi Sarveswara, I am writing this after reading the book called "Dharma Sindu". A man can shave on his own. A man need to cut his hair / shave only 3days a week I.e. Monday, Wednesday and Friday only. For having sat Santhanam (particularly boy) a man shud not shave on Monday. If this is followed it will increase ayu (life span)
No person shud shave / cut his hair at noon or in the evening otherwise it will be Ayushinam for that person.
Hope this is clear.

Sarveswara,
This is from Dharma Sastram book by Radhakrishna Sastrigal and this book has been referred by Maha Periyava.
Shaving or Vabhanam (shaving and hair cut) can be done on Mon, Wed, Thu and Fri. Sun, Tue, Sat, Sashti, Ashtami, Prathamai, Amavasai, Srardha thithi, very early morning, evening are not good. Father and son should not do vabhanam on the same day.
Also have heard that brahmins are not supposed to shave on their own, it should be done by barber and there are specific directions in which you have to be seated for vabhanam. Also have heard there are mantras to chant before vabhanam.
Know these are quite difficult to follow in todays world, but this is what the dharma sastram states. Dharma sastram also states brahmins should live only in India and should not cross the seas! There was a thread on how Maha Periyava used to go through vabhanam and the cleansing thereafter using mud balls, which was very interesting. Maha Periyava has indeed proved that people can follow dharma sastram provided we have the will.

Thank you for this information. I know it is difficult to follow everything but at least if I follow a few principles then it is good (in my opinion). For example not shaving on Tuesday, Saturday, Sunday is easy to follow.
