Namaskaram: Can the elite list help me on clarifications on this points regarding sayam sandya
1. sayam sandya: achamanam should be given in which direction? (some books say north, some say west) 2. sayam sandya: pranayamam should be done in which direction? 3. sayam sandya: smritya achamanam and shrouta achamanam should be done in which direction?
4. Can namakam and chamakam be recited without abhishekam on siva lingam after sandya vandanam. I am not perfect in chanting but with recording playing and with a book in hand, I can recite.

Namaskaram Sri sarveswaraHere are the answers to your queries in the same order: 1 & 3. Achamanam is usually advised in the direction of East or North only. For Saayam Sandhya, it would have to be facing North. 2. Pranayamam as part of the rituals before the Gayatri Mahaa Mantra Japa Sankalpam would all be facing North (Saayam Sandhya). All Pranaayamams during and after the Sankalpam would be facing West. 4. Namaka-Chamakam can be chanted without an abhishegam, but preferred in the day time only. Vedas chanting after evening is generally not recommended. Further, it is preferable that you meet any one Vaadhyar (purohit) and undergo one round of training, get his blessings for your chanting. Though it is a welcome step to start chanting, it is not advisable to be on your own - especially learning by playing an audio recording is prohibited by most of the learned scholars. As an interim measure, you can learn a bit or two from those recordings but you chant in front of a learned scholar / purohit, take his views on the nuances of spelling and pronounciation, take his blessings to chant and then go on with that. May Sri Periva always bless you to carry this on in the best possible manner.

Thank you for the reply. I hope I find a good guru. Problem is I dont want to go to some of these people who know how to teach but they have made a business out of this and they teach everyone without looking for qualification(as long as they give them the money). May Sri Lord Rama guide me and Sri Periva blessings be with me.
Jai Sri Rama

Dear Sarveshwara,
One more thing i would like to add regarding sayam sandhya vandanam which was Instructed by our Purohit is "We should perform sayam sandhya out side our puja room".
In case we have balcony, then facing North we need to do in the balcony. Else any other open place where we can perform sayam sandhya peacefully other than using our puja room or the place where we performed our morning sandhya.
Hope this is clear.
