A DAY WITH THE LIGHT.
Part 14.
Once a devotee, concerned that His hands will be aching due to the prolonged decoration He was doing, asked Periava about it.
SriSaranar, with a pleasant smile, replied, “what else this hand is meant for?”, and sang the song
“சேதுலார ஸ்ருங்காரமு சேஸி சூதுனு”------ a song by Sri Thyagiayer, meaning “I shall have darsan after decorating you till my hands ache”
On another occasion, He said, “You put me in a high pedestal as Matathipathi, and do everything yourselves without allowing me to do
anything. Let me at least do this ‘Alankaaram’ (decoration) by toiling with my body. ‘Kaaryam’ (கார்யம்) means particularly ‘doing something with the hand (கரம்). Let something like that be left for me also!”
Although all His needs are looked after by the close attendants, He will draw water from the well, Himself. Our minds will be perturbed if He (Bhagavan) should do it when attendants are there to do everything for Him. At the same time, it is a beauty to watch Him do things without any tiredness, and very methodically.
[He was mentioning about ‘Kai Kaaryam’ (கை கார்யம்), but is there anybody who has done ‘the work of the legs’ (walking) as He has done? How many miles and miles He has walked?].
Many have mentioned about the phenomenon of the one who performs the Puja and the one to whom Puja is performed , merging together. But, Gurunathan, who can be in other states ( of mind and body) also while being in ‘Nirvikalpa samaadhi’, can likewise separate Himself from the one who is worshipped, while being one with Him also. I should mention something which is not known to many.
Everyone knows that He accepted the position of the head of the Mutt, at the tender age of 13. But later by His amazing act of Surrender, and the abundant blessings of Ambal and Acharya, He very soon mastered the ‘Sastracharams’ and even attained the Wisdom beyond the Sastras. But He had been hiding His experiences (from others). When the whole world crowned Him as the king among wisemen, He talked about Himself as one among the ‘ordinary’. From such a person, will emerge, once in a way, His experience.
When, at the age of 13, a great Puja pundit of the Matam, was teaching Him the methods of doing Puja, something happened. The pundit told Him, “while doing Archanai, you should do it with the thought ‘Thvam vaa Ahamasmi’ (த்வம் வா அஹமஸ்மி)---meaning that the Devatha to whom the Puja is performed and the one who performs the Puja are one and the same. The young face of the child ascetic bloomed with a smile and a light from the eyes. He said “ Is it ONLY during doing Archanai?” The pundit was amazed at hearing this and he prostrated before Him.
