In order to be active, an entity has to root itself firmly in a place and only from there could it show its might. Such a place, where something takes root, is called 'Adhishtanam'.
Upon hearing this word called Adhishtanam, you might recall that a Sanyasi's samadhi (place where buried) is also called Adhishtanam. You might wonder why it is called by this name.
When great people attain siddhi, a ray of their power of grace will remain in their body even after the life energy has left it. The place where such a Mahan's body is buried will serve as a place for this blessing ray to take root and flow to the bhakthas. Hence, such a samadhi is called Adhishtanam.
In actual practice, at some places they keep Thulasi on the samadhi; at other places, they consecrate a Siva Linga over it. The place where Thulasi is placed is called a Brindhavanam, and the one where a Linga is placed is called Adhishtanam. Even among the archaryas of our mutt, two elders who attained siddhi in Kalavai have Brindanavams with the Thulasi and the one who attained siddhi in Ilaiyatangudi has an Adhishtanam with the consecration of a Siva Linga.
