Anu renuya thokada – Abhang by Sant Tukaram
This beautiful abhang by Sant Tukaram probably captures the entire essence of Hindu philosophy in a few lines. Though I have attempted to write the Marathi words in English to the best of my ability, a basic knowledge of Marathi may help the readers to pronounce the words correctly.
Anu renuya thokada tukA akashsaevadA sAndilE triputi deep ujlllalA gati tuka mhane Atha urlo upakArApurata ghilun sAndile kalevar bhava brahmacha Akar
Meaning: It is a little to translate this abhang accurately in English as the meaning is somewhat hidden or implied. It highlights the importance of one’s powerful soul ‘jeevatma’ that tries to overcome ‘maaya’ or ‘delusion’ faced by the physical body. The rough translation is as follows:
Tuka Says, I am smaller than an atom yet I fill the sky and space because my soul is larger than my physical body.
Viewing this world as only an illusion, I discarded the triad of subject, object and perception of this physical world.
Tuka says, now my existence is only to serve others.
