VEDAS - THE RECITATION PROCESS: (Excerpts from the 'Veda Prabhavam' section of the book 'The Great Hindu Tradition')
The varna, swara and matra are to be recited in the Vedas without blemish. Praati sakhya, a Sastra, has coded these aspects into a rigour. Even in day-to-day life we flinch when words are mispronounced or used badly. When that is so, can anyone imagine reciting Vedas with impure intonation or wrong accent? It is therefore vital that one should recite Veda mantras only with proper guidance from a Guru.
Cassettes and CDs: In this context, a new trend is the use of cassettes and CDs for learning Vedas. Out of their enthusiasm many try to learn by listening to recorded devices. Nothing can be more injurious: learning of Vedas should be only from a Guru.
Mechanical devices cannot correct mistakes that one is sure to make initially without being even aware of the mistake, and these will therefore become permanent.
It is equally incorrect for a student of the Vedas to be flippant in the memorising or pronunciation of the words. These have deep meaning and even deeper vibratory effects, and should not be taken casually. Answering a question from Saunaka, Sage Kapila in Kapilasmriti has this to say: “One who wrongly recites the Vedas is a sinner: this is a sin worse than the three eternal sins of brahmahatya, brunahatya and veerahatya. A person who changes the words of the Vedas at his own free will is a sinner too.â€

Dear Sir, I am overseas and have deep interest in learning veda with proper recitation technique. Do you have any suggestions on how I can learn - for example, are there any classes conducted over web? Thanks.

Am glad to know the interest of the new member vijyar to learn Veda though he lives far away from our country. I see both sincerity and genuiness in the member's approach.
As commented by the Forum Administrator the member can come out with his personal details either through the forum or my personal id that being: sarmasathrigal@gmail.com
While on the same subject I have an experience to share here. Recently there are 3 overseas requests for teaching Veda through skype & web from three different names - the surprising element here is all the three requests carry the same tone, language and usage of words. These requests appear both in my personal mail box and the forum as well. Are these three different persons are one & the same? I wonder.
Quite possible that all the three persons are different and it could have been just coincidence in their language of communication.
Perhaps that is the reason that our Forum Administrator insists for personal details before extending a helping hand for those who live outside India. Learning Veda is entirely different from learning our other scriptures like puranams and slokams. One should be very careful before attempting to learn Veda or teaching Veda.
I will be happy to help any one if there is a genuine interest from our community people who live outside.
Best Sarma Sastrigal

Sarma Sastrigal Saar, Vedas+ varna, swara and matra + vibration - we keep talking about the need for perfection. It would be useful to know why "perfection" is so important in addition to any information on the significance of the structure that you can share. Thanks in advance Kumar NJ - USA

Sir,
About two decades ago, I have read an article by Late A.N.Sivaraman in Tamil explaining veda adhyaayanam - from karma to gana pata. It is in simple tamil. I don't remember the name of the journal; perhaps it might be Amudasurabhi or Kalaimagal, in the year 1994.
