Sri Jayadevar was an outstanding Sanskrit poet and composer who is believed to have lived in Orissa somtime in the 12th century A.D. He composed "Geetha Govinda" - an exceptional literary masterpiece that is celebrated even to this day in the form of bhajans, music and dances.
Geetha Govinda is a lyrical poem describing the divine love between Radha and Krishna and their various emotions. It is organized into twelve chapters (sargas), containing 24 pieces of songs (called prabhandas in Sanskrit) of eight couplets each, popularly known as "Ashtapadis." For some reason, the first song has eleven couplets and the tenth song has only five. Each ashtapadi also has some slokas either at the beginning or at the end.
In the tradition of Sampradaya Bhajan, Sri Jayadevar's Ashtapati finds a prominent place. It is melodious to hear the Ashtapatis. Anyone interested to start a thread on Jayadevar's Ashtapatis?
