Evidences for Divine incarnate in Veda, Ithihasa, Puranas
Let us see the “Shiva Rahasyam”, I had mentioned. Divine stories which are considered having more authority than Puranas, are called Ithihasas. Ramayana and Mahabharatha are epics. The epic which is related to Shiva is “Shiva Rahasya”. Similar to Mahabharatha, it is a big book containing more than fifty thousand verses5. Lord Subrahmanya had taught it to a sage, by name, Jykeeshavya. Jykeeshavya had passed on to Sutha Maha Pouranika and through Sukaa, it got taught to the sages in Naimisharanya and to the world. So it is generally said that it was written by Jykeeshavya. Subrahmanya also has not stated that he has taught it to Jykeeshavya, on his own. He has stated that he was only teaching what was earlier taught by his father, Parameswara to Ambal.
Similar to the division of 7 chapters in Ramayana and 18 chapters in Mahabharatha, Shiva Rahasya is divided into twelve parts. They speak entirely about matters related to Eswara. Stories about Shiva devotees have been mentioned in the ninth part. The history of our sixty four Nayanmars are also in this. A great man by name, Hradhatha Shivacharyar who was born a Vaishnavite, but transformed into a great devotee of Shiva after experiencing several divine wonders, was living in Kanchanur, which was about ten miles away from Mayavaram. His story is also there in this (ninth part in Shiva Rahasya). In the same way, the biography of our Bhagawath Padal is also given as another elaboration. It has described these biographies, which were to take place later, in the form of describing them as observations through futuristic vision.
Shiva Rahasyam is a book which was written to highlight devotion to Shiva. The Adwaita path which is so important to our Acharya, is not a very relevant subject for that book. Still, Acharya was a Bhakthavathara also, as he was a Gnanaavathara. Further, as can be ascribed only to him, that he was a great devotee of each one, Eswara, Vishnu, Ambal, Subrahmanya, etc., and thus a great devotee of all Devathas. Even though he himself was God, a Supreme spirit (Parabrahma), embodiment of supreme knowledge, with a view to feeding devotion to the people as the first step towards Supreme knowledge, for the sake of fulfilling the objective of the incarnation, he acted out as a devotee himself. He acted as a devotee who would undertake practices like travelling to different places of pilgrimage, reciting hymns, performing pujas, etc.
In this, as a devotee of Ambal, he has created ‘Soundarya lahari’ etc., Sri Chakra puja and also installed Sri Yantra in many temples. True to “Bhaja Govindam, Bhaja Govindam”, he has toured the entire country performing bhajans and writing commentaries on Vishnu Sahasranama etc., lived as a devotee of Vishnu. In having displayed himself as a devotee of each God, He has also done it as a great devotee of Shiva. He has kept only the Chandramouleeswara as the most important deity in all his matams. He was a person who had applied sacred ash (Vibhuthi) and rosary (Rudraksha). He has also rendered Shiva based Slokas like ‘Shivanandalahari’. Only on the basis that He helped growth of devotion to Shiva in this way, his biography finds a place in the Shiva Rahasya.
The important episode described by this book, which covers the biography of Acharya, from his birth in Kaladi till he attained salvation in Kanchi, is the worship he had done of Parameswara, at Kailasa, in his physical form and the five crystal lingas, known as Pancha lingas given by Parameswara, blessing and advising him to ‘perform puja to these lingas, with the leaves of Bilva, three times a day. Even though being a very great follower of Adwaita and he had written several books of commentary on Adwaita, propagated it in a way convincing to Vedic societies located all over the country and therefore, the pinnacle of achievement in his life was the name, ‘Adwaita Pratishtabhanacharya’, bestowed on him, it was not important for Shiva Rahasya. The fact that the five lingas which he installed at five different locations and performed puja, were the ones directly obtained from Parameswara himself, has been given importance in this book.
Using devotion to Shiva as the tool for establishing communion with Shiva, which is actually the liberation, is the objective of Shiva Rahasya. Whereas, Acharya was one who had preached showing devotion to whichever God, as a precursor to attaining Supreme knowledge and to obtain liberation as the realisation through the practice of inquiry into Jnana. It is not apt to include Acharya in the league of the Sixty four (Nayanmars), Haradhatha, etc., who gave utmost importance to only devotion to Shiva and communion with Shiva. Therefore, if Acharya is not mentioned in Shiva Rahasya, which was made to establish only the greatness of Shiva, on the lines that he was also a devotee equal to the ones who were completely devoted to Shiva, that is expected. However, the book talks about He being the incarnation of Eswara himself. This is a very significant evidence.
Ninth part of the Sixteenth chapter entirely narrates Acharya’s biography. It starts with Parameswara telling Ambal, “A pure Brahmin, with the name, “Shankara”, who will be a part of me, will be born to a very fine Brahmin lady, in Kalady, known as Sachala, in the country of Kerala.
Kerala Sachalagraame Viprapathnyaam Madhamsaja:
Bhavishyathi Mahaadevi sankaraagyo dwijothama:
In this way, Parameswara calls Ambal as “Mahaadevi” and says, “Madhamsaja: – “Madh Amsa Ja” – born of my part; born as part of me.
5Sri Charanar have mentioned that ‘Shiva Rahasya’ has been quoted as a book of evidence in the ’Nirnaya Sindhu’, a very famous book on Dharma Shastras.
