Evidences for Divine incarnate in Veda, Ithihasa, Puranas
Gapardhi means, the person with matted hair, the one who does not tie his hair. Vyupthakesa means, the person whose hair has been shaved. That is, (laughing) the one with tonsured head!
It goes about mentioning contradictory names, one after the other. He is Jyeshtan (Eldest). He is Kanishtan (Youngest); In the same way it mentions contrasting qualities, one after the other, that He is Purvajan (one who had come in the beginning). He is Aparajan (one who comes in the end), it has mentioned that He is the person with matted hair and also He is the one, who has the tonsured head.
There is a special feature about Gapardhi (Matted hair).
‘Gapardha’, means matted hair. It does not refer to the matted hair of all people. The matted hair of only Paramashiva is referred to as ‘Gapardha’. Is he not the only one, who is ‘Jatajuta’ (long tresses of hair twisted on the top of the head-with matted hair), while Devas like Mahavishnu, Brahma, Indra et all, have neat hairdo and wear golden crowns? Are we not eulogising that matted hair as “Panitha sadayum, Pavalam pol maenium’? The matted hair of Parameswara, which has special features, who has adorned it along with Ganga, Moon, Serpant, Skull, Datura flower (Oomathampu), Laburnam flower (Konrai poo) etc., is only given an exclusive name as ‘Gapardha’. Therefore, it gets confirmed that ‘Gapardhi’ is also a specific name referring to Parameswara only directly.
Therefore, the name ‘Vyupthakesa’, which occurs next, should also refer to only Paramashiva. Instead of being one out of the various names describing that all the carpenters, potters, fishermen, Pulayars, (in olden days, person belonging to low caste), thieves, etc., in the world are also only Paramashiva. ‘Vyuptakesa’ is found to be among the names which refer to him as the protector of the world (Lokadheetha), instructor in sacred knowledge (Lokadeesa), the Eswara, as a singular person. Instead of saying ‘the person who is with matted hair’, ‘the person who is with tonsured head’, it has referred to him as only one Gapardhi and only one Vyuptakesa. We learnt that ‘Gapardhi’ is a specific name fittingly attributed to Him. In that case, should not ‘Vyuptakesa’ be similar? This is an important matter which we need to give our attention.
After referring to Him, in plural, as, He being carpenters, He being potters, etc., instead of showing that Parameswara resides as the soul of all the living beings in the world, while it goes about rattling out that He is as “Bhava, Rudra, Gapardhi, Sahasraksha, Sathathanvav, etc., the names that are attributable to only Him, when He is as himself, if Vyuptakesa is mentioned after Gapardi, does it not make it clear without any scope for doubt that it refers to the form of an ascetic with a tonsured head, applicable only to Paramashiva? Which other form is there for Eswara, which shows Him having a tonsured head, other than our Acharya? Be it the several names of Nataraja, Dhakshinamurthy, Kaamari, Thrupurari, etc., don’t they all point out to the one with matted hair? Don’t we see that ‘Nataraja’ means, ‘expansive Red hair’, ‘’Dhakshinamurthy, means, clean ‘dropping hair’, ‘hair blowing hot flames in the names ‘related to Bhairava etc.? When it is so and if Vedas spell out specifically ‘Vyuptakesa’ referring to Paramshiva as one single person who has discarded his hair, it is certainly a statement made in supreme foresight, pointing out the Shankara incarnation that was to take place in future. Bhashyakara (Abhinavashankara, who wrote the commentary for Sri Rudram) clarifies in this way.
That Bhasyakara searched the puranas, because “would it be enough to say that it was our Acharya, because there is a specific reference in Sri Rudram, to a person with tonsured head? Would it not be apt to cite some other proof?” It is a procedure laid down by elders that Vedas should be interpreted only with the help of Ithihasas and Puranas.
Ithihaasa Puraanaabhyam Vedam Samupabhramayeth
Bibeth-Yalpakruthaath – Vedho Maam – Ayam Pradharishyathi
Meaning of the first sentence is, Ithihasas and Puranas are the descriptive explanation to Vedas, called Upabrahmanas. A person who has studied Ithihasas and Puranas along with Vedas, is a ‘Bhahuzruta’, a very scholoarly person. A person who interprets the Vedas without taking the Ithihasas and Puranas, is ‘Álpazruta’, person barely with any knowledge. It seems, Vedas shudder on seeing such a person. “Pipethi Alpa zrudath Veda” – Veda is afraid of Alpazruta. Pipethi, means, being afraid. Why is it afraid? “because “Maam Ayam Pradharishyathi”. That is, it seems it is afraid that “he would drag me to all sorts of places, would victimise me by giving interpretations as per his whims”. Meaning for matters which are not explicit in Vedas should be obtained only with the help of Ithihasas and Puranas and not to be interpreted as per one’s whims. That is why, Bhashyakara while researching who that Vyupthakesa was, a form of Shiva, he found out so and so in Vayu Purana, very clearly. He had observed that in that puranas, it has been mentioned as:
Chathurbhi: Saha Sishyaisthu Shankaro (A)vadharishyathi.
When he read the sentence that Shankara Bhagawath Padal is going to incarnate with four disciples, he understood without any doubt that Acharya is the same Vyupthakesa, mentioned in Sri Rudram. He confirmed this by finding out similar proof from “Shiva Rahasya” Ithihasa also. So he wrote in his commentary that Vyupthakesa is the incarnation of Shankara.
We have seen proof from Vedas, that Bhagawath Padal is an incarnation. Let us see the evidences in the Ithihasas and Puranas. In between we have also seen that Vishnu Dharmottara and Vayu Purana, the supplement of Vishnu Purana, have confirmed what is stated in the Srutis. Let us see some more.
