Old Lady and Baby
An aged PAATTY. ( Paatty means Grandmother in Tamizh) Paatty is, one who lies down as it is, with legs stretched. But, this Paatty is not like that. She kept wandering around this entire Tamizh Nadu without remaining at one place. She was always wandering street by street, place by place, without leaving even a remote village (unvisited). That patty had such an enthusiastic energy. Let the Paatty’s subject be as it is.
A CHILD. A very healthy “KOZHUK MOZHUK” (chubby) child it is. What will a child generally do ? Will play ecstatically. Will keep running hyper-actively without remaining in a place even for a moment. But, this child is quite opposite to this. It never moves from the seated place.
Funny PAATTY. Funny CHILD. Paatty is running like a child. Child is sitting like a Paatty without moving from the seated place.
But, this child is the reason for that Paatty to run here and there with such enthusiasm despite her age. She did so much of work only with the energy given by the child.
Who is this ‘PILLAI’ ? ( Child )
(The word) ‘PILLAI’ means only Him. He is that Child whom we respectfully mention as ‘PILLAIYAAR’. If someone does not move from the seated place, the practice is to mention as – ‘Stone Pillaiyaar’. ( Kallu Pillaiyaar )
He is the Elder son of ‘PARVATHY PARAMESHWARAR’, Mother and Father of all the worlds. That is the reason we call him as ‘ PILLAIYAAR ’ in Tamizh Nadu.
In other places he is mentioned as ‘GANESH’ ( Ganesar ), ‘GANAPATHY’. PILLAIYAAR is the Leader, Easar, Pathy, for all the Army and Demons ( Bhoothaganas ) of Lord Shiva. Hence the name ‘Ganesar’, Ganapathy. There is no one superior to Him. He remains as the Senior, Prime, Supreme for everything. There is no other Superior ( Naayagar ) above Him. That’s why, also the name as ‘VINAAYAGAR’. ‘V ’ comes before a word to denote a thing sometimes in appreciation on a higher note and to denote a thing sometimes as an Opposite. Here it comes as an opposite, meaning “without a Superior”. It means there is no one superior to Him.
There is no blessing He hasn’t bestowed upon (to his devotees). Particularly, He is the one who destroys all the obstacles which confront us. Hence, we also call Him as ‘VIGNESHWARAR ’. We pray Him first before starting any venture to avoid hurdles. First worship ( Puja ) is only to Him.
He has names as ‘Gajamukan’, Gajarajan. These names are acquired due to His appearance with Elephant face.
The Elephant has excessive physical strength. Yet, as Lion and Tiger, it does not harm other beings. Only Elephants do huge physical tasks for assisting people in places like Burma, Malayalam. (Kerala) ‘PILLAIYAAR’ too possesses such great strength. He does not exhibit this to harm us, instead He does good deeds to all of us. Elephant has sharp intelligence and great memory. ‘PILLAIYAAR’ is a personification of Intelligence.
Whatever it does, Elephant looks beautiful. It’s Swaying Shaking Walking, Eating, Swinging the Ears, Lifting the Trunk — all are Joyful to watch. It’s Face is extremely Calm to look at. Though small, the Eyes are Calm and Loveable. We keep on watching only the Elephant among animal species.
Among Human species, Child is the one we always want to watch. Child has no evil thoughts. Playing blissfully is the nature of Child. We too feel happy watching it.
PILLAIYAAR is equivalent to an Elephant. Equivalent to a Child. Hence, we do not feel fully satisfied even if we see Him any number of times. He has Child’s heart with no deception and cunningness. Has a good heart like a Child. Physically strong as an Elephant. Sharp Wisdom. Above all, Insatiable beauty. Personification of abundant Joy.
Things which do not merge, happens in Him naturally. A Child below the ‘Neck’ — Human Form. The Face above is as an Elephant — Animal form. But actually, He is a Celestial person. Among the ‘Devas’,( Celestials ) He is the God to receive first Puja.
Being a Child and a personification of highly superior philosophy, PILLAIYAAR has variable contrasts. There is a beauty in this. Everything gets merged in Him, since contrasting features are embedded in Him. For example, He has a broken Tusk in one hand, and ‘Kozhukattai’ ( Round Pie made of flour ) on the other. The sweet substance within the Kozhukattai is called ‘Poornam’. Poornam means ‘Completeness’. The Tusk in one hand is ‘Broken’. But the other hand holds ‘Completeness’. All the perfect substances filled in totality is PILLAIYAAR only. Realisation of this is the ultimate Bliss. The alternate name for Bliss is “Modham”, ‘Modhakam’. ‘Kozhukattai’ too has the name “Modhakam’.
Another contrast is – PILLAIYAAR is a child and hence a Bachelor. Only because He came as an Elephant and chased ‘Valli’, She married Lord Subramanya Swamy. Even today, this devout Bachelor ( Kattai Brahmachari ) is worshipped to get marriages fixed. What does this mean ? With the stance He is in, and we, who are in a contrast stance, are lifted little by little with supreme grace, by blessing us with the things not even needed for Him.
Being known as ‘Stone PILLAIYAAR’ for sitting and not moving from His place, will make the devotees reach the Supreme with one great push. Similarly, in the end He made Avvaiyaar reach ‘KAILAASH’ itself, with one great push with His trunk from where He was seated.
We realise so many such philosophies while we keep on watching PILLAYAAR. Even this is only to the limited extent of our intellectual capacity. In fact, He possesses immeasurable great qualities which are beyond our capacity to realise.
It is said, “Childship and Godship are where there is Worship”. God himself has come as a child in the form of Pillaiyaar. Hence, being celebrated as a child deity in Tamizh Nadu, He bestows his blessings sitting everywhere, without leaving behind a nook or corner. Only because of His blessings that Paatty was running around the entire Tamizh Nadu.
To know who the Paatty is : She is ‘AVVAIYAAR’ (the great Tamizh Saint poet). “ PILLAIYAAR – AVVAIYAAR”
