Crimson Colour of Kamakshi
KAmAkshi is the Divine Mother who blesses the whole world, holding the sugar cane bow and the flower arrows. The flower arrows are for liberating all the living beings from the mischief of the senses and the sugar cane for liberating them from the mind’s uncontrollable activities. The funny thing in this is that Manmathan (God of Love/ lust) also holds the bow made of sugar cane and the five arrows made of flowers! His job is just the opposite of AmbAl’s. He is only creating the uncontrollable emotions of love and lust in all the living beings with the help of the bow and arrows.
That is also AmbAl’s ‘LeelA’ only. She only has given that power to Manmathan. The raw fruit is bitter initially, becomes astringent, then sour, and then finally becomes sweet; same way, humans also should progress step by step and become ripe in the end; AmbAl has created all these nature’s laws—emotions. We should not surrender to these emotions as otherwise they will wash us away. If we are not able to escape from these forces initially, we should not lose heart. We should pray to AmbAl in order to reduce this force, with the firm belief that if we surrender to Her She will guide us and release us from these emotions. While in the midst of the family life itself (SamsArA) we should think about this and find out if there is any essence in this. Such a thought itself is an essence. That is why we get the feeling of detachment from the family life. Even if nature’s different laws affect us at different times, we should not lose heart and keep praying to ParAsakthi; then, as a tender raw fruit grows, ripens into a fruit, and when fully ripe, detaches itself from the branch and falls, we will also come out of the family tree, fall at the feet of AmbAl, and merge with them in the end.
A lot of living beings have done and accumulated KarmAs in the past like us. All those living beings must take rebirths to wipe out these KarmAs. They can either increase or reduce the burden of KarmAs in the rebirths. Whatever be the condition, there is no way to wipe out the KarmAs except to take rebirths and spend them in DhArmic ways. In the end, when all the KarmA is wiped out, we will reach a stage where there is no rebirth.
The humans must take rebirths as a training centre, in order to liberate themselves from the cycle of birth and death. In order that humans can take births, AmbAl has created this sense of lust and appointed Manmathan as an authority for that.
But everything has to be within certain limits. AmbAl will not allow Manmathan to influence Her devotees and wise men (Gnanis). She was the one who attracted Lord Parameswaran towards Her. Manmathan tried to play his trick on Him. He opened His third eye and burnt him down. Then He just sat there without any movement what so ever. How AmbAl’s drama of the universe will progress if He sits like that? Therefore She took away the sugar cane bow and the flower arrows in Her hands, and stood before Parameswaran. But She did not come there with the arrogant attitude of Manmathan that ‘I shall bring Him under my influence’; but with true love and humility. Immediately, Parameswaran transformed into ‘KAmeswaran’. She looked at Him with Her loving eyes as ‘KAmAkshi’, ‘KAmeswari’, and He in turn became KAmeswaran.
We call this action of Ultimate love oozing out of the inactive Brahmam as KAmAkshi. Brahmam which was a colourless and pure crystal like matter, attained the crimson colour then.
It is customary to consider love and compassion as red in colour. The word ‘Raktham’ originated from the word ‘RAgam’ (love), ‘AnurAgam’. Even in Tamizh (language), we use words such as ‘Manach chemmai’’, ‘Sevviya Ullam’, etc. This is the crimson colour of ‘KAmAkshi’; the colour of compassion.
