Experiences with Maha Periyava: Where did the cow go?
The camp of SriMatham was at Tiruvidaimarutur. Every morning the Go puja (Cow puja) would be performed before the start of the Sri Chandramouleeswara puja. A completely black-hued cow was maintained by the Matham for this purpose. One morning the black-hued cow did not come for the puja. Another one was brought. The worship concluded. Periyava sent word for the Karvar. Venkataramaiyyer came and prostrated to Periyava.
“Where is the black-hued cow?”
“It is missing since last evening. Seems to have broken loose and run away. It was not to be found in spite of our searching far and wide. Men have gone out today also.”
Periyava completed His anushtana and set out from the Matham. No one knew where He was going. He walked down all the roads and finally reached the street where the peasants lived. The inhabitants there were surprised. They prostrated to Him as He walked down their quarters. As Periyava walked surrounded by the devotees, past a particular house, the mooing of a cow in a loud voice, “amma .. ma …” could be heard. Periyava stopped walking and set for the Karvar. As soon as he came Periyava said, “Go in and fetch our cow.” The Karvar went in and finding the black-hued cow tied to a post there, brought it out to Periyava. Periyava stroked the cow affectionately. The peasant to whom the house belonged, came out and prostrated to Periyava.
“I did not know that this cow belonged to the Matham. It was grazing in my fields. So I caught it and tied it here. You must forgive me,” he said in a pleading voice and fell at Periyava’s feet.
Periyava spoke to him affectionately with laughter all over His face.
“You have struggled hard to raise the grain in your field. The cow from the Matham has grazed there and caused you a loss. So you caught the cow and tied it up. You have done nothing wrong. It is we who did not take sufficient care of the cow. It has eaten your grain. We should pay you compensation for this.”
The peasant, his wife and children prostrated to Periyava. The peasant said, “Sami, please do not say such a thing. I did not know that the cow grazing in our fields belonged to the Matham. So I tied it up. The harvest will be bountiful because the Matham’s cow has grazed in my fields. That is enough, there is no need of any compensation.”
Periyava appreciated the refinement of the peasant, looked at him intently and gave him prasadam.
