Shri Raman by Maha Periyava – Gems from Deivathin Kural
BY SAI SRINIVASAN on APRIL 10, 2016
LORD SITHA RAMACHANDRA MURTHY
Jaya Jaya Shankara Hara Hara Shankara – Sri Rama Navami is celebrated on 15th April. Wishing you all a very Happy Sri Rama Navami. Let’s unearth a few gems from Deivathin Kural about Bhagawan Sri Ramachandramoorthy. In this chapter Sri Periyava shows us an easy way to destroy all our bad thoughts. In the next day or two I will post what Sri Periyava wants us to do on this day. Thanks to Smt. Manasa Lalitha, our sathsang seva member for the translation. Ram Ram Ram Ram.
SHRI RAMAN
The word ‘Raman’ means a person who is happy all the time. It also denotes a person who strives to keep others around him happy and contented. Sri Rama was a person who always willingly, positively, and happily practiced the ways of Dharma in spite of confronting so many hurdles in life. He was never frustrated by the troubles he faced in life. He was always happy in his inner self, though he looked sad outwardly at times, as we know.
The practice of not getting overwhelmed or discouraged by the good deeds as well as troubles in life is called ‘Yogam’. The person who practices the same is known as ‘Yogi’. The ways of attaining yogam for a common man is to practice the Dharma as preached by our Sasthras with utmost discipline and adherence. When a person starts living as per the Dharma Sasthras, without getting submissive to personal wishes, the mind obtains utmost clarity. The clarified mind will always stay light and happy and the cleansed mind leads to ‘Moksha’.
Sriman Narayanan came down in the form of Sri Rama setting an apt example to the common man to live happily by practicing Dharma. Sri Rama in all his speeches, never used to comment as ‘this is my opinion’ and maintained everywhere as ‘this is as said by the Rishis and Dharma Sasthras’, thus maintaining extreme humility. Sriman Narayanan is the one who is to be known and attained by way of all Vedham and Dharmam. He himself took the form of Sri Rama to show us the path of attaining mukthi by completely adhering the ways of Vedham and Dharmam.
There are people who comment sarcastically that “Sri Rama was not able to hear Sri Seetha’s distress voice from a distance of a mile when she was abducted by Ravana and how will he hear to the voices of his bhakthas?”. They utter these words without being aware of the fact that Sri Rama lived in this world as Rama – in the form of a human only.
He also describes about a Play:
“There is a play being staged and it is Ramayana. Rajapart Ramaswami Iyyengar is playing the role of Sri Rama in the play and his real life children are playing the roles of Lava and Kucha.
In the play, Sage Valmiki accompanies Lava and Kucha to meet Sri Rama. Sri Rama questions Valmiki as to – who the children are?
Would not it be quite farcical and bad if the actor in Valmiki questions the actor in Sri Rama on the stage, that the latter did not know his own children? And just think of the situation on stage if the former would comment like ‘these are the children of Rajapart Ramaswami Iyyengar and you are the Rajapart Ramaswami Iyyengar’.
Hence, it is good to understand that Sri Rama lived on this earth as a normal human being only, without showcasing any of his superior powers.”
The Vedic deity – The Paramathma, Sriman Narayana took the form of the child of Sri Dhasaratha and the Vedas themselves took the form of child of Sri Valmiki – Sri Ramayanam. Ramayana in complete talks only about Dharma. Sri Kausalya Devi, mother of Sri Rama, taught, packed and sent Dharma along with Sri Rama during his vanavasa, just like a normal mother would pack sweets for her child during the child’s vacations. She also blessed him saying that, “Raghava, the Dharma that you adhere to with bhakthi, devotion, boldness and discipline will protect you, forever.”
Niyamam (Observing rules) is quite important for a person to adhere to the Dharma Sasthras without paying any importance to personal wishes. Similarly, it is also important to stay bold and one should not leave Dharmam just for the reason that anyone else criticizes the practice of Dharma.
Sri Rama was himself criticized by Sri Lakshmana for practicing Dharma. He said that Sri Rama had to face so many hurdles only because he was strictly adhering Dharma. Lakshmana, also on account of love and devotion to his brother, sought the latter’s permission to start war against their father, Sri Dhasaratha, to regain the Rajyam and give it back to Sri Rama.
But Sri Rama, never listened to anyone’s words against Dharma and practiced and protected Dharma always, in any situations. Dharma in turn, protected him always. Though Ravana had ten heads, it all came down since he never practiced Dharma in his life.
Nevertheless, Sri Rama lives till date as the swaroopam of Dharma, Dharmaswaroopam, “Raamo Vigrahavan Dharmaha”.
One who always thinks about Sri Rama and keeps meditating as ‘Rama Rama’, will live happily in the path of Dharma forever destroying all their evil thoughts.
